If your vehicle is 11”4 (3.4m) tall or taller or 7'10” (2.4 m) wide or wider, including mirrors, awnings, and jacks, you will need a tunnel permit.”I am unsure of the height of my 06 31IB. I believe the rig is at least 8 ft wide. We’re camping now I Zion and don’t have a tape measure. Pls advise height and width. Thanks so much!

Re: Height of 31IB Reply #2 – May 08, 2019, 10:54:18 am The height of "all" LDs is about 10'6" from ground to the top of the AC shroud; I always calculate 11' if there's any question of clearance. This is the page link for the "large vehicle" tunnel trip:The Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel - Zion National Park (U.S. National Park Service)An "escorted" passage is misleading; traffic is controlled at each end of the tunnel to allow large vehicles to pass through, one direction at a time (obviously). There's no "escort" as there is with highway construction. (Or, at least, there never has been any time I've gone through the tunnel.) Pay the $15, follow the speed limit, and stay in the middle of the road through the tunnel; no traffic will be coming at you, so use the whole road. 4 Likes
Re: Height of 31IB Reply #3 – May 08, 2019, 11:56:05 am Jules,We drove our ‘15 RB through the tunnel from the Bryce Canyon side November of 2015. We paid the park entrance fee before waiting in line (we were at the head of the line). I don’t recall a “tunnel fee” only the park fee. But after reading Joan’s link there probably was one as I do recall a two passage limit. Current usage limits are very interesting. As we waited for the Zion outbound traffic to pass through the tunnel cars piled in behind us. The last car in line was give a baton which they were to hand off to the ranger who waited at the Zion end of the tunnel. We were the escort and we were told to drive down the center of the road staddlng the center line as we drove through. Not as long as the tunnel in Yosemite, it is pretty spectacular with several “windows” cut out allowing a quick view of the canyon walls beyond. https://youtu.be/3fs1fIneTdcEnjoy your passage.Kent 1 Likes

It was a little strange the first time we drove the our first LD through the tunnel, many years ago.Larry
Re: Height of 31IB Reply #5 – May 08, 2019, 01:14:00 pm I agree with all that’s been said. I drove LD671 through in year 2000. It was quite special and well worth the 10 bucks it cost back then. I think it’s something every RV owner should do at least once during their traveling years. Enjoy the ride! 😁

Re: Height of 31IB Reply #7 – May 08, 2019, 02:33:47 pm I definitely agree with Larry's advice to restrict viewing through the "windows" of the tunnel sides to passengers; if the driver is sightseeing, the result of splitting attention between keeping the rig in the middle of the road and looking at the brief glimpses of red rocks may cause a driver to "overcorrect" and get too close to the tunnel side. The passage through the Mt. Carmel tunnel is an easy ride, but it does require that the driver stay on the job; Zion is a beautiful park, but, like most popular national parks, it can be absolutely teeming with people between April and late October. The park roads are narrow, and there is a lot of congestion of vehicles, bikes, and people. 1 Likes
