The Audubon Bird Guide App
We found this free App which is looks to be a helpful tool for bird watching.   We've installed it, been playing with it a bit, and it looks promising.

The Audubon Bird Guide is a free and complete field guide to over 800 species of North American birds, right in your pocket. Built for all experience levels, it will help you identify the birds around you, keep track of the birds you’ve seen, and get outside to find new birds near you.

Ed and Margee,

Another thank you!  What a great app!

Cyndy and I are going to download it.  It is sure easier to carry a phone than our copy of Sibley when out hiking.

I downloaded the app and  my initial enthusiasm has been dampered with my first search for the woodpecker (flicker) hanging out on our front porch. Easy to find in our Audubon field guide but not so easy on the app. Flickers dont show up in the bird family search function or under woodpecker. Had to search flicker to find it in the app while it is listed with woodpeckers in their book. App needs work.

Just downloaded it!  My wife just went to a local chapter meeting and they stated that Kern County is one of the better areas for bird watching in the country. Who knew?

Here is another option which is the one I use.  The pro version costs $15 but I find it easier to carry than Peterson and Sibley guides (have trouble deciding which so I end up with both sometimes).

There are others as well.

The "playable calls" feature is interesting.  A long-time friend who is a professional photographer discovered that if one plays the call of a bird to lure it into range to photograph it, there is a very serious fine when a ranger or wildlife officer discovers you!
