Water pump chugging....
Hi, We have recently (the last couple days) heard the water pump chugging when we use it.
We have experienced that at the end of the fresh water tank, but not when there is plenty of fresh water.
I read in another post that this happens when the water flow is low but we see no real difference in the flow.

We are running from the fresh water tank and when the chugging first started the tank was less than 1/2 full (got down where the gauge showed 1/4).  It was just filled and that didn't make any difference.

The "chugging" happens no matter the volume of the water coming out of the faucet/shower (smaller stream as faucet turned on only a little or large stream with faucet turned on all the way).

We are still running our old water pump.  It has been about a year since it was cleaned last to remove deposits.  However most of that time there was a filter used when the fresh water tank was filled up.

Any ideas?

Ok, just now it chugged only when there was a smaller stream of water (faucet turned on just a little) and didn't when the toilet was flushed or the faucet was turned on all the way.  Maybe it fixed itself?

Hello Jane.  Does the water pump act this way with all the faucets to include the toilet?  Just saw your follow-up post ... I'd suggest you check the aerator on the kitchen and BR faucets.  It's amazing how much material accumulates in that part of the faucet and will certainly restrict water flow.

"We have recently ... heard the water pump chugging when we use it."

Have you 'Burped' (reestablished the air bubble) in your hot water tank recently? I'd try that next!   ::)

This is the number one cause of low flow problems.
The source of most of the corrosion is the water heater, a good reason why flushing it once or twice a year is recommended.

We don't have any flow problems at all - just as strong as always.

Yes the pump seems to chug for all fixtures (toilet, bathroom faucet which means shower head connected to that also, and kitchen sink).

However the specifics of the chugging seems to change - sometime the entire time the faucet is on, sometimes only towards the end of the use (eg about 5-10 seconds after turning it on), sometimes only when the faucet is full on or only when it is just a little on.
I am just using water like normal so not trying to force it to happen. Before I started playing today - the last couple of days the chugging seemed to be there all the time. However we don't often turn faucets on full (we just turn them on a little or halfway depending what we are using water for).

We have not tried making that air bubble in the water tank and will try that.
One thing different we are hitting a cold snap (for us) and we typically use the water in the mornings or later night so maybe it is related to things being colder.

For what it's worth. what I've experienced in both my Lazy Daze and my Airstream is the pump loudly chugging or pounding after a drive. It seems as if it loses its prime, or air gets into the pipes, or something like that, when the vehicle is in motion. This affects all faucets, the shower, and the toilet. After a few quarts of water have been run, the pump sound returns to normal.

Yep, what Andy said...

Pump chugging is often an indication of air in the pump.  The air can come from low water in the tank allowing air to get sucked into the system.  Driving with a tank below 1/3 sloshes enough that air can get into my lines.  A leaking strainer, or a leaking connector between the tank and the pump can allow air to get into the pump.  Since the hoses between the tank and pump operate under vacuum rather than under pressure, a leaking connector does not allow water to drip out.  Rather, it allows air to bubble in.

Loss of the air bubble in the heater will lead to the pump turning on quickly, and running continuously until the water use ends, but is not likely to cause the pump to make a chugging noise.

There is a potentially very simple issue.  If a water hose has shifted, so that it is touching a wall, that can "telegraph" pump noise, turning the wood panel into an amplifier, sort of like a drum.  If that is the cause, a bit of foam rubber between the hose and the wall will stop the noise.

I do love the spontaneous regeneration of inanimate objects--my electric step was not working for several weeks this fall, but apparently the gremlins moved on & it is happy again.  Perhaps an exorcism?   :D

The chugging seems to be gone yesterday.  So we are voting for air in the lines, that is what Scott's guess was.

We did warm up yesterday and our daytime high temperatures increased up to 60 vs the 45 degrees F we were having before.

But I know to watch and not worry especially if driving with a lower fresh water tank.

Thanks everyone for the input.
