Couch into bed October 13, 2018, 11:39:20 am Lots of comments in the archives and online, but...What do you use if you make your couch into a bed full time?The seller sent egg crate foam mattress toppers for both sides. The sheet set that has the top sheet also with elastic looks intriguing. I also saw several comment on a type on travel sack. Open to suggestions of what has worked for you. Thank you Absolutely gorgeous here with the fall foliage. My sister saw two bear cubs playing last week dinning on the wild plums. She did not see momma bear but stayed inside and watched the play.
Re: Couch into bed Reply #1 – October 13, 2018, 12:13:41 pm "What do you use if you make your couch into a bed full time?"---I had put a 3" memory foam mattress pad in the overcab area in my TK (previously used for sleeping, now used for "storage") ; the cover that came with the mattress pad was cheap and flimsy, so I made a replacement cover out of medium-weight cotton twill with a Velcro closure down the long side. It's a bit like putting panty hose on a couple of pythons to get the cover off for washing and back on again, but the cover does protect the $ mattress pad.I hauled the memory foam mattress pad down and laid it on the longer couch (in a MB and a TK, one of the couches is about 3" longer than the other) when I switched to using one of the couches as a permanent bed; it's a little more narrow than the bed (couch base cushion pulled out and back cushion filling the space), but not an issue at all. I use a fitted sheet on the foam pad, and weather-appropriate covers, e.g., light blanket to down comforter, on top. As mentioned before, in the TK or MB, there are three drawbacks to leaving the couch in a "pulled-out" bed mode: aisle space is definitely reduced, the cabinet over the pulled-out bed is more awkward to reach, and the window shade is more difficult to pull down evenly without kneeling on the bed. I'm not short, but these issues are true for me.Each person has different ideas on what works best; one just has to try different arrangements and configurations until s/he finds the most comfortable and workable solutions for the "personnel" involved.One of the hundreds of "YMMV" questions. 1 Likes

Both purchased from Costco.Back In The Day when we’d make the couches into the Super King and store the pads in the overhead each morning 😖 the two twin MF pads fit the “bed” perfectly. Now-A-Days with the partially extended couches the MF Pads have their fitted sheets and the “extra” width gets tucked under the couch back rest (the angled back rest support is pinned back leaving it upright) which helps to eliminate the cold air from underneath the couch from creeping upward. Nice and comfy however “single” MF Pads may be a better fit with no need to tuck away the extra width if a Super King is not wanted. As it is, we are very comfortable day or night and if the Super King becomes desirable we are good to go.Works for us. Kent 2 Likes

The tricky part, depending on how fussy you are, is to find the right type of foam and the right thickness. For example, I don't like MF so went with 3" of latex. That seemed to work ok although now I'm now adding another inch... You may get by with what you find at Walmart or similar stores. Google "sleep on latex" to find a company that sells higher end mattress toppers in three different firmness ratings. A cover that encloses the foam is worthwhile whether it is store bought or home made.The big advantage to something store bought is that you can exchange it easily if you didn't make the right guess on firmness and thickness. I assume the less expensive mattress toppers you may find at discount stores have less dense foam. Frank 1 Likes

Re: Couch into bed Reply #6 – October 14, 2018, 04:16:37 am My wife uses the rear couch as her bed, and we use it as a wide couch together in the evening with abundant pillows letting us customize our position. We took out the LD bolster so we don’t have to deal with it at night. We left the little piece of wood and use it as a shelf. We had a mattress made in Grants Pass that is 33” wide and about 8” thick. She claims it is the most comfortable bed ever. I’m not sure if that is a qualified statement, because she also says that about the Tempurpedic at home, but she did get to specify the foam used in layers. 1 Likes
