Oil Test Report
I sent an oil sample to Blackstone Labs when I changed the oil and filter last week; the results came back much more quickly than I expected, i.e., in less than a week!

My 2003 TK had 109,300 miles on it at the time of the sample taking; I don't tow. I have run Motorcraft 5W-20 and used a Motorcraft oil filter since taking delivery; the first oil and filter change was at less than 1000 miles, and the oil has been changed every 3000 miles since. I plan to keep this LD until I am no longer road-worthy; it has been diligently maintained, but, at the current mileage, I was concerned about excessive wear on the rings and/or contaminants in the oil, and/or some other little surprise lurking in the "crankcase", so I figured that $28 for the oil report might be money well spent.

The tester's comments: "You've got a healthy-looking Ford on your hands....metals readings are much lower than we'd expect ....internal parts are getting along great, so there isn't any sign of a mechanical problem on the horizon. No fuel or coolant contamination was found, and the viscosity is well within spec for a 5W-20. Oil filtration is also in good shape, with insolubles measuring low at just 0.2%."

So, apparently, the old rig is good to go; I wish that my "internal parts" got along as well as the wagon's.  ;)

Great idea! Through the years I have always wanted to have an oil analysis performed on various vehicles but have just never got around to it. Picking up a new LD at some point in the future sounds like an opportunity to finally perform the testing. In my mind I was thinking of having the analysis performed every 25k miles or so. Does Blackstone have a recommended interval that they mentioned?

I don't know if a specific interval is suggested for an oil test; I had a "blood test" done on my 15-year-old unit because of its age and mileage. I was curious as to whether keeping to the manual's recommendations for oil and filter, but shortening the interval between changes, had made a difference in the overall condition of the engine. I have no definitive proof that following this protocol has made the difference, but it apparently didn't hurt, since the motor's "innards" seem to be in good shape.

You might check Blackstone Labs' website and the "Tube" of the Blackstone fellow telling how to interpret the report:

I think it would be interesting to have tests performed at 10k intervals to track the progress and possibly use the information for predictive maintenance.
