Storing the LD - Parking Off Level
Many folks here have heard my endless entreaties to park their LD so water can run off the roof. I don't care how well sealed the roof is, standing water will somehow eventually get inside. And you know the name of that tune when it happens.

Our 11-year blocks turned to dust, so I had to make up some new ones. I use pressure treated 2x12's covered with any decent polyurethane. The high one is four blocks high. Since I had some old plastic blocks I screwed one to the top block. Too much is never enough. The high one has a single 1/2" rebar set in the concrete to keep it from being pushed when climbing up.

PS, These are for the home driveway. They do not go with us.

I use the plastic ramps and have been happy with them except they have cracked (but still useable).  I have been considering buying these as a replacement.

Our driveway is on a slope, requiring 9" tall leveling ramps.

Smaller ramps are carried in the LD, along with 2 sets of Lynx blocks.

Be sure to buy the genuine LYNX brand blocks, they hold up much better than cheaper copies, especially in very cold weather where cheap blocks can shatter.

Don,

I’ve been using a combo set of leveling blocks for the better part of two years. I don’t use them at home since I tend to run the fridge while it is in residence.

Pooling of water, for whatever reason, tends to occur above the drivers door and I try to be as diligent as possible to usher it off the roof after a rain.

When we picked up our LD at the factory, I purchased three of their plastic leveling ramps. Todd assured me that three would be all that I needed. It wasn’t long before I discovered that this was not always the case so I made a tiered set to go along with those that I purchased. I agree with you that pinning the levelers is often necessary.

I knew that the plastic levelers had a tendacy to “skate” away as I backed onto them. When I built my new set out of 2x6 planks of pine, I wanted to insure that they didn’t skate away from one another if I had to double stack them for increased elevation.

With that in mind, I drilled holes through each block to align with the block below them. This allowed me to “pin” the blocks together to prevent any shifting when backing onto the set.

At first, I used “ten penny” nails to pin the blocks together, but soon discovered that a nail could spell disaster if one disappeared when breaking camp. I quickly switched to plastic pins to do the job.

Recently I discovered that when using the plastic levelers that they also skated backward when placed on top of my wooden sets. I will be pinning them as well to make leveling a bit easier.

I’ve posted photos of my block array in the past, but here they are again. If and when I build a new set, I will use a wider plank because while the 6” width is enough to support the full width of the tire, a wider “landing zone” would be preferred.

2" X 10"s are adequately wide for ramps, heavy too.

That’s the beauty of the RB. Quite a bit of outside storage and carrying capacity. Still underweight, so far. 2x8’s may work well enough.

I made two 2x8 ramps 4 planks high in 1996 for my other SOB out of 2x8 common fir.  They have lasted all this time and were carried on the back of our old SOB in the weather.  There are some cracks starting but they are holding up.  I did pin them with 16d sinkers, I never thought about them coming loose.  Now that we have a 98~MB I made a box sling which they slide into under the LD just in front of the bumper and only once at the 7 Flags self carwash in Vacaville did they slightly bottom out due to an incredibly steep exit ramp.  They have worked everywhere for me including in front of my storage where there is a slope.  I also carry a set of the plastic blocks which came with the LD when I bought it and some additional 2x8 x18" blocks to help out where needed.  I will add photos later.  We found that so far two ramps have accommodated us well although some times we most park in a direction to put our front on the low side to ramp it up.  I don't like putting one ramp under only one wheel per side of our rear duallys.

    I will add Photos later

I remember my dad telling me many decades ago that a trailer should always be stored level or over time the framing would sag the direction of the lean. Maybe the LD with aluminum siding is more rigid?

Well, my driveway is angled, along with my street. The only time my rig has been level is while on the highway or when leveled at a campground. No noticed problems that I can tell. I think the springs would take a 'set' first. Again nothing that I've noticed in the last 18 years. I do flip it around in the driveway to even out the sunlight on paint fading, and rubber deterioration. RonB

PS, it was not the lumber dimensions or type of construction I was trying to bring out. It is the height needed for water to run off when parked on a level driveway. It takes at least four 2 x whatever to get the right height.
