That is what is left of the plastic clip that held the temperature sensor to the cooling fin.
The thermistor can be replaced.
Wonder what is regulating the temperature now, is the refrigerator cooling continuously?
What is the interior temp? Does changing the temperature adjustment have any effect on the interior temp?
You can tell if it is running by checking the temperature of the boiler.  If it is hot, its running .
