Solar Post Light
About 10 years ago, Andy Baird posted about using a Hampton Bay solar post light as a subdued entry door light. I bought one, attached it and it's still ticking after all these years with the same rechargeable batteries in place. Anyone else still have theirs? I recall that Don Malpas put one in the bathroom skylight as a night light.

We have probably had those as long and have gone through a few of them. However, recently we had to replace it again and found this which we like a lot.

Nice - not so clunky. I've got it bookmarked.

Two questions... Do you not have an amber patio light above the Fence Light, and if so, what's the advantage of the fence lite?

How is the fence light affixed to the wall of the coach?   ::)

We do have the amber porch light but often don't think to leave it on and that little light is always on after dark. Also prefer to use it when boondocking although you can't turn it off anyway. It is attached just like the old one with 3M superlock and neither has even begun to come loose.

The amber light is much brighter and could be annoying to neighbors if left on all night, and it attracts bugs. The post light is just enough light to see the door handle and step and not much more. Perfect to leave on during darkness.

We still have ours, one in the bath skylight and one next to the door. The latter has been glued back together several times because we drop it. I put AL foil around the inside so the light only goes down. I replaced the LD outside light with a bulb half the wattage of whatever wattage the factory put in.

Tried a newer one, but the white light was far too bright for us.

When we are sitting out, we do care for much light.

That was one of Andy's gems.

"what's the advantage of the fence lite?"

In a nutshell: 1) you never have to remember to turn it on or off, and 2) it uses no battery power. If you visit a friend and return after dark, it's on. Nice.

As Chris mentioned, an amber fencepost light also makes a perfect nightlight if you have a rig such as a midbath that has a skylight in the bathroom. I had two mounted to the inner rim of my skylight in Skylark, and they worked for years (and are still working), coming on at night to provide just the right amount of light and going off during the day.

If you don't have a skylight in your bathroom (e.g., my new Airstream), a motion-sensing amber LED light will perform the same function. Since it only turns on when you enter the bathroom at night, and turns off automatically when you leave, a set of batteries will last for months.

I still have my Hampton Bay solar post light, right outside the door. The clear lens part has long since fallen off, but the LED light keeps on ticking.

Andy, remember when you discovered those on a trip we took to Home Depot together? It's always fun to go shopping with you and see what you find to re-purpose for a use not originally intended!

For Steve S., the light is affixed using 3M Dual Lock (the heavy duty kind). It was also necessary to Dremel off a portion of the back side of the light, in order for it to fit flush.
