Might have to join them on the road as California housing just got more expensive today:California to become first U.S. state mandating solar on new homes – Orange...Oh, and then there's California gas prices.
Re: six weeks without a shower Reply #4 – May 09, 2018, 10:40:02 pm Enlightened souls, to say the least. In my twenties I owned a VV bus camper. To this day the most fun I ever had was driving that thing through Mexico and all over California. Definitely a setup for the young. I understand why he keeps working on it. That year VV was one of the first "pancake" engines - piece of junk. '71 was the last year of the upright, carburator engine.
Re: six weeks without a shower Reply #5 – May 10, 2018, 02:07:06 am I thought I recognized that manual. I got an earlier edition shortly after I learned why Volkswagen owners usually became volkswagen mechanics. I must say his looked way too clean joelBugs: 58, 64, 74 Campervan 72 As an Amazon Associate Lazy Daze Owners' Group earns from qualifying purchases.
Re: six weeks without a shower Reply #6 – May 10, 2018, 04:16:53 am Ahh, the memories. I'll always get a warm feeling when I see older VW vans driving around. I graduated high school in 66 and my Dad gave me his super clean, converted for camping, 63 van. It had cork insulation on the roof and the sleeping area was plywood and Formica! Lucky for me in 63 they had gone to the powerhouse 1500cc engine! It was pretty heavy. That summer, I begged and pleaded relentlessly to be allowed a trip to Mazatlan for a week to go surfing at Cannons Point. Well, also lucky for me my mother insisted on Mexican auto insurance because 50 miles north of Mazatlan my buddy and I hit a cow driving at night. It caved the whole front end into where the metal wouldn't allow clutch pedal movement. We were able with both feet to push it away and make it drivable. We limped into Mazatlan and the next morning called the insurance adjuster. He came out, took a few pictures, and said: "ok, no problemo, we'll have it fixed in a month." Sweet! My week vacation turned into a month. My parents never believed the story to this day. 1 Likes
Re: six weeks without a shower Reply #7 – May 10, 2018, 08:57:04 am Wrightstuf, my older brother had a similar Baja experience in 1973 except he and a buddy were in a late sixties MGBGT convertible. They were going around a curve (probably too fast and not quite sober, I'm guessing) and hit a fence. Apparently it was illegal to have an accident in Mexico so they were arrested and fined. I doubt they had Mexican insurance. The car was driveable but so misaligned that they wore out all the tires and the spare getting back across the border.
