Dad got a special license to drive at 13 years old in 1934 and driving a car was one of his very favorite things to do. When he was unable to drive, he was heartbroken and lost one of his life's great pleasures.The nuts don't fall far from the tree. I really enjoy driving cars, trucks, the RV, and boats. I'm not looking forward to my vehicles driving themselves, or my kids telling me that it is time and I have to give up my keys.HD 3 Likes

And big rigs already do plenty of speeding, tailgating (and 'tailswinging', i.e., how close can I get to running that RV into the ditch with the back end of my trailer!), cutting in and out, lane wandering, and a lot of other dumb stunts. Some truckers are professional, skilled, and courteous; many others are poorly trained, inexperienced, overconfident, aggressive hotdoggers. I've had many close calls over the years with some of the latter types! As always, YMMV.

We have extremely limited public transit out here in the boonies--the OATS bus (Older Adult Transportation Service--bit of a misnomer, since they will also haul younger than 55) operates out of our Senior Center 8-5/M-F, in town, & I think I heard there is service to Kansas City & St. Joseph a couple of times per month for DR appointments; nothing in the evening/weekends/holidays. I've helped a few folks get to church or DR appointments in the city, as I'm sure others have done, but a self-driving car would perhaps not be such an issue with the traffic out here in the boonies.HD said, "...had to take my dad's keys away when he was 80 and his increasing dementia made his driving a potential danger to himself and others."When I took Mother's keys at 72 (I'd previously alerted city police/county sheriff, hoping they'd stop her/intervene, but they would do nothing to a well-to-do white lady in our little town), Mother sicced the family lawyer on me; my sister in Texas didn't see her often & thought "it wasn't that bad" to activate Mother's Durable Power document "yet," so I had no backup there & had to give the keys back. Her mother & older sister gave up voluntarily--but they lived in the KC metro with more traffic. My F-i-L's 90+ father had cataracts & once admitted he'd not seen me as I waved at him going through town when there was no other traffic on the street--but he still drove out to the farm (including crossing a busy highway) & none of his children would intervene (though they made him give up his pipe because the burned holes in his shirts did cause concern about fire danger...). I finally got got Mother's DR to sign a Dept. of Revenue form for the State to suspend her license due to the Alzheimer's & we hired someone to drive her for errands/some help around the house, & that kept her in her home for another year....just lucky that neither she nor my F-i-L's 90+ father hurt or killed anyone. It's a hard journey for all concerned, so I'm hoping my minivan with 119k will hold out long enough for my last wheels to have the self-driving bugs worked out.Lynne 3 Likes

This happened yesterday on Hwy 58, just east of Tehachapi. I don't know all the details but apparently a woman was driving the wrong way on the highway and clipped a semi.

Reply #39 – April 05, 2018, 06:59:49 pm I don’t dispute the “lack of structural integrity” in many class A ( and every other ‘class’) motorhomes, but from the very brief description of the accident, I am pretty sure that there is a lot more to this story. I don’t have any information, but the rig appears to be old and in rough shape, and if indeed the driver was going the wrong way, going too fast or not, and hit a large truck, I think that pretty much any vehicle, except maybe a tank, would have sustained damage. 😳 4 Likes
