I wonder how many people you have to get the group area at Morrow Bay, it was empty last year during the GTG.  Surprisingly at many state camp grounds the group sites are not much more expensive then the individual sites?

The group sites at MB are small and only allow a few RVs. They are more appropriate for tent camping.
I have not found a park with a large enough groups site to accommodate the group.
Neither the Park's website or Reserve California has any details on the group sites, information that once was available when Reserve America was the reservation agent. I had hoped Reserve California's website would improve, with time, it hasn't

In 2003, when Morro Bay SP was closed for renovation, the GTG was held at Lake Cachuma, in the biggest group site I could reserve.
It held only 25 RVs.
The site had to be paid for up front. After pre-paying over $2000, I had hard time getting people to pay whom said they coming.
I was short several hundred dollars up until a few days before. I didn't like begging for the payments.
Never again, after that the GTG has been held at MB, where folks make their own reservations.

I concur with Larry on the group site question. I have also put together group camp outs in the past and, frankly, it's a PITA. People's plans will many times change, or some are just plain flakey. Doing individual sites and reservations works best, IMO.

I was only suggesting the group sites for the few of the stragglers that can not get sites at the main Morrow Bay park.  Then they would be near, walking distance instead of the other camp grounds miles away.

Oh, that's not a bad idea, if anyone is willing to pursue it.

There are two group sites at MB; one is for tents only. Per Larry's comments, there is no additional  information about the sites on the reservation website except that both show as booked for the MB dates.

I'd go with the earlier suggestion of checking (multiple times per day) the reservation website for site cancellations.

There was a time years ago - don't know if it still applies - when the upper group site would be used for overflow. This only applied to overnight stopovers, I believe, as in those days we never found the park too full to accommodate us when we would arrive w/o reservations. Might be worth checking...

I concur with Joan, multiple attempts should be made to call the office and reach someone there with the authority to assign the sites.  Mojomama called to adjust her reservation and was told by the person who answered that the park was closed and that there should be no reservations made until it opens including the time when we all have our reservations,, "how did you get those reservations" said the person who answered.

An unexpected event will prevent us from attending the Morro Bay GTG.  I had reserved site #90 for 4 nights 3/8 - 3/12.  I will attempt to cancel the reservation early this evening and post the info.  We wish that we could be there and hope that another LDO will be able to grab the site.  I hope that everyone has a great time!

I am not surprised in the least at this response. There appears to be no 'dot connection' among the various components of the state parks system; I suspect that each operates in its own 'air-locked' universe, resulting in a largely dysfunctional entity.

As ever, YMMV.

I cancelled our reservation at Morro Bay, site #90, March 8 - 12.  I used the online system to make the cancellation.
I hope that everyone has a great time.

Thanks, Jeff.  I just saw your message and called, but no cigar.  The young lady said that there are no openings for the weekend, including site 90.  Either someone jumped on it or her computer system is not showing accurate openings.  Everytime I've called the person I've talked with has asked me to be patient since their computer system is either very slow or continually logs them off in the middle of a transaction.  I feel sorry for them - it must be stressful.

I didn't ask on the phone, but the website shows that Morro Strand and Montana de Oro are also completely booked for the weekend.

We were able to get reservations in Bay Pines Travel Trailer Park for the weekend though.  It's located between the Hwy 1 offramp and the turnoff to MB State Park.  Full hookups, cable, pool, sauna and $3 or $4 less than the state park per night. Not sure if it's in walking distance, but maybe we can make "a deal" at the SP entry for coming in for lunch or some such. Will keep monitoring the Park website though.

I stayed at "El Chorro | SLO County Parks" in the dry camping area on a previous trip when we were driving north to south on 101.  While off the beaten path for SLO or coastal visitors, it was a nice inexpensive place with clean restrooms and a beautiful sunset.  It looked like most folks who stayed in the section with hookups were there with family groups and took advantage of the adjoining county park sports fields.

One way or another, we'll see you over the weekend.

Depending on your abilities, it's a pretty easy walk over to the campground (about a mile and a half).  Hop on one of the hiking trails and you can walk in the back way.  Watch out for traffic on South Bay Blvd. as it can get quite busy at times.

Sounds like a nice walk.  Or we could park in the lot just across the road from the campground gate & I could leave hubby there & meet him later for dinner at the cafe.  Yum!

"I cancelled our reservation at Morro Bay, site #90, March 8 - 12.  I used the online system to make the cancellation.

I cancelled our reservation several weeks ago, and was told that they would send me a check to reimburse for my payment in FOUR TO SIX WEEKS!  I harrumphed at the time, but knew there was no point in saying anything to the clerk about the absurd amount of time.  After all, they had been able to acquire my almost $500. payment in seconds, but it was going to take four to six weeks to return it????

Since no one else who has cancelled has mentioned this, I am wondering what the usual procedure is.  The friend who snagged our site said that she got an immediate refund from her original site when reserving the one we had released only moments before.  But that was a slightly different set of circumstances.

Has anyone else been told of this lengthy refund time?  I was not concerned about this until having recently read about how many snafus they seem to have with the reservation system.

Judie, if you paid the original reservation by check, the time frame you were given for reimbursement may not be out of line. A credit back to a card generally appears on one’s next statement.

I hope you get it straightened out; sorry you can’t attend.

On second thought, is paying a reservation for a state park campsite by check even possible? If not, I have no idea why a refund would take as long as Judie was told it would.

My memory failed me when I said "four to six weeks"; it was "six to eight weeks" when I looked back at my paperwork.  And yes, I paid by credit card, which meant they had the funds within seconds, but will hold onto it for up to two months, and then send me a check.  Hey - a great way to borrow money at no interest for two months at a time.  They also extracted nine additional dollars to cancel the reservation!

But it is okay - we enjoyed the California camping spots for plenty of years when we lived there, so no hard feelings.

Judie, I paid for the reservation by credit card in September.  I cancelled online Feb 21st and my credit card was reimbursed (less the service fee) on the 23rd.  The process seemed to be seamless and work well.  I wish that we did not have to cancel.  We were looking forward to this trip since early last year. But stuff happens.  We will try again next year.  I am sure that it will be great and am looking forward to seeing photos and comments from this year.
