LD/RV insurance/road service 2017/2018
Do you all have any recommendations and suggestions for the best LD insurance coverage and road service?  We happen to be at AAA now.

We are still hoping to find a low mileage/one owner 2009 or newer any size LD. We are trying to hold out for a front/mid bath model so we can enjoy the large rear windows.

Hoping you all have a Merry Christmas and a great new year! 🎅🏼🐯🎉

We ordered white/gray  2018 27' mid bath 1/3/18 and we are hoping for a July 16th 2019 delivery, sold, and tried a Lithium Travato, wish  I would have kept the Lazy Daze 27’

Our AIS agent hooked us up with National Interstate as our LD insurance carrier. National Interstate provides Coach-Net as our Road Service provider. Haven’t needed either at this time but they are both well respected in the industry.

While at AAA prior to our Yellowstone trip last July, they gave us a quote on LD and auto coverage. The cost was only slightly more but did not offer Coach-Net. We passed.

I don’t mind paying for insurance and really don’t like needing the service, but what can you do?

Good luck with your hunt. Maybe Santa can help you out.

Insurance Topic:

Which Insurance company do you use

Any insurance recommendations other than Progressive?

There is probably NOT a best but many that are decent depending on the many variables that insurance companies use to determine insurance rates.   I've read many RV owners mention every insurance company you might know and reported that they were excellent while others reported the same ones were terrible.  So you see, there may not be a best.   The one caveat that I've repeatedly heard is it's wise to find an insurance company that has a strong history of insuring RVs.  I suppose that makes sense.

And somewhat interesting are the many long RV topics about which is the best roadside assistance.   I've read many RV owners mention every roadside assistance company you might know and reported that they were excellent while others reported the same ones were terrible.  So you see, there may not be a best for this one either.

Hope this helps.

I understand wanting to familiarize oneself with RV insurance policy options in advance, but until one actually has something to insure, obtaining a reliable quote is moot. Nevertheless, you might want to check out these insurance brokers; their business is to help an owner find the most appropriate coverage for his/her needs and circumstances.

Every situation is different, and costs and coverages vary widely; there is no one universal, 'one size fits all' best policy for everyone.

RV insurance policies often include emergency road service; if the policy one eventually selects doesn't include this, many RVers consider Coach Net to offer the most consistently reliable emergency road service coverage. Emergency road service costs and coverages are not all the same; be sure to read the policy carefully for any little 'gotchas' and/or limitations/disclaimers in coverage type, locations, equipment availability, payments, etc.

As ever, YMMV.

I use Allstate insurance for my RV insurance for one important reason.  When my LD is not in use, which is most of the time during the year, Allstate lets me suspend the comprehensive an collision portion of my insurance which brings the annualized rate down to less than $200/year.  If I am going to use the RV for more than three days, I can reinstate the comp/collision for the duration of my trip and then suspend it when I return.  If I need to take it out for a short period of time for maintenance or to fill it up or dump the tanks, I can just call them and let them know that I will be using it for the day or two and they will let me drive it without taking it off suspension.

I don't know if other insurance companies do that.

As for roadside assistance, I am currently using Good Sam, but had Coach-net until this past year.  Coach-net provided good service for my cars the few times I used them.

Hope this helps,

Might you share the reason for the switch to GS from Coach Net? (From what I've heard/read, the change is usually the other way around!  ;) )

Without comprehensive you have no protection for fire, theft, vandalism. etc.

Progressive for Insurance.

I still use CoachNet for road service.  Each year I think about switching to Good Sam for the cheaper price.  This year I stayed with CoachNet because of the superior service (in my limited experience) and the Assist America coverage that I wanted for some foreign travel.

One thing I can't quite figure out is CoachNet pricing.  I paid $139 for Premier with early renewal ($10 off).  When I log into my account I have the option of basic ($79).  Other years I can't find that option anywhere.  My guess is that they're still changing things AND it depends on your claims history.

I understand the appeal of minimizing insurance costs by periodically suspending comprehensive and collision coverage if the rig will not be used for a period of time, but this would not be my choice for the very reasons that Jim stated, particularly if the rig was stored at a remote location.  Keeping the rig next to the house (my situation) may reduce the chances of 'collision' during any down time, but the risks of fire, earthquake, limbs from a neighbor's redwood tree breaking off in high winds, someone climbing the gate and breaking into the rig and damaging it, or breaking the gate lock and stealing the rig are real possibilities. (A few years ago during a wind storm, a huge spike from the neighbor's redwood tree smashed through the back patio cover and took out a corner of the house, just a few feet from where the rig is parked; stuff happens!)

YMMV, but I'll retain full coverages with no lapses.  :)

Regarding Coach Net - we did NOT have a great experience in northern British Columbia 3 summers ago.  We waited overnight (luckily in a rest stop area) for a tow truck that was (it turns out) just over an hour away.  We gave exact location instructions using an address from an RV park nearby that we called from - but somehow they thought their closest driver was 4-5 hours away in southern BC

Once they arrived the next day theydid not know some details about RV towing and sent for a larger tow truck that could handle RV's.  Turns out it wasn't the size of the truck that mattered, but the knowledge of the driver - relating to dealing with the drive shaft while towing ( I don't remember the details, but something about disconnecting it).

In the end they got us towed about an hour and a half away and we spent the 2nd night in the parking lot of the repair place - where we had a belt and frozen belt pulley replaced.

We got Coach Net because of their supposed better service in Canada.  I would say the "network" loosely consists of any tow driver they can contact, and that their dispatchers need better training in Geography.

The next year, we switched to Good Sam.  Haven't needed it but also haven't left the states.

You may well have had the same experience with any emergency roadside service provider; as far as I know, there is a great deal of overlap among providers as to the tow operators and companies they contract. In  small, more isolated areas, there may be very few, if any, options of personnel and equipment, and the same truck(s) may be servicing calls from all emergency road service providers.

"You may well have had the same experience with any emergency roadside service provider..."

Now I'm going to spin that 180°.

At one time I had Good Sam... I now have Coach Net!

I broke down (fuel pump) in Lone Pine. Good Sam said they could send a 'trouble-shooter' out from Bakersfield in about 3-4 hours. And what if this trouble-shooter were unable to properly diagnose the problem? And would he tow me to a repair facility thereafter?

I resolved the problem by contacting a tow service 1½ miles down the road. They were able to get me back on the road the next day even though the part was overnight delivered from Reno.

Think I'll keep Coach Net!   ::)

I re-upped with Coach Net this year.  I had a transmission go bad in the early Fall of 2016.  They did well by me.  It was a 80 mile drive for the tow truck.   When I called I was in a truckstop just north of the FL/GA state line off I 95.   It took some time to find a place to prepare the trans because a hurricane had just gone through the area and everyone was busy for months.   They found a place in Jacksonville FL, but by the time the tow truck could get me there the place would be closed.  They found a place I could camp a quarter mile from the truck stop.  The trans was in a fail safe mode of some kind that allowed travel in 1,2 and 3rd; no 4th or 5th).
I have also used Coach Net with my car.  All these services as subject to the people that answer the dispatch call first.  If the tow company is good we, the customers, get good service.  If the tow company is quick on the trigger but short in quality techs the Service, be it Coach Net, AAA, or who ever gets a bad reputation.  Because of this I always complete the customer satisfaction survey that follows this type of event.  It is the only the dispatch service has to know the good tow companies from the bad.

When we got the RV our insurance broker sent us to Progressive.  Progressive does not insure my home or other cars, they are insured under another policy with a different company.  They are an independent brokerage and deal mostly with commercial accounts.  When I got out of the USAF they picked me up and have always done well by me.
