We, too, leave our centerpiece folded down for several reasons, but the cat's insistence is one of the foremost of these...he likes to ride up top, and if he decides to make the leap down, at least he doesn't land on the driver's head (while driving)if the centerpiece is folded down. We don't mind, either way, and rather like that the bed is always made up. :-)Sandy

We just found our mattress solution yesterday. It is a foam futon made by Foamex with REflex foam. It has true High Density foam at the core with a softer foam "batting" surrounding it. It is 6 inches thick and even my 275 lb husband doesn't "bottom out" ! We brought it home yesterday, and I swear it is more comfortable than my home mattress. (about $230 as I recall). I built a new hinged bottom from plywood - the part that can fold up above the drivers area - I built it in the Home Depot parking lot - a very good way to go - and suggested by Andy. It is quite good now. I tried putting the foam just over the original bed, but my head was too near the ceiling. I tried adding just the crate foam over the top of the LD bed, but wasn't the extraordinary comfort I have now.The foam is either 4 or 6 inches - I cant remember - I bought it in foam shop on San Pablo Ave in Berkeley, California. You cant just casually buy this foam - The sellers have to really be selling a premium product and a cheap pad is no good.The overall comfort level is as good as a $1000 bed. There is no comparison to LD bed.-John B

I see Barry beat me to this post but you can try his suggestion. I think it's a visco-elastic type foam. Your best bet is that type of foam mattress topper. They will outlast any other types and are more comfortable still giving good body support. This is the type of foam that makes all the highend mattresses so comfortable and was developed originally for the space program to ease the stresses of launch for the astronauts. Prices range greatly but are often in the $70 and up range depending on size and mfg.Mike

Wierd, but true."LindaIt may sound weird to some but if you've sleep on one or tested one in a highend "sleep" store that sells them and other similar mattresses it's not so unbelievable. Not many people that take the "test drive" of their mattress send it back at the end of the 3-4 mo trial period depending on the current deal. They were the first company to use that NASA technology and since then many other companies have started using it in their mattresses and selling it for many other uses like pillows. Most have basically the same technology but Tempurpedic did a special improvement to theirs to make it more durable, so they say anyway, and is the only one recognized by NASA. It's the mattress that's used at KSC for the astronauts pre-launch stay.Using almost any one of the visco-elastic toppers from the many companies that make or sell them will greatly improve any mattress! The LD multi-density foam mattress is a great foundation for it so using any of them 1.5-2" thick will make it very comfortable and close to the Tempurpedic. The topper Tempurpedic sells is over priced IMO based on other prices for basically the same thing. The mattress even though expensive is in line price wise with other similar comfort level ones and even some not nearly as comfortable regardless of technology used.Mike

One isn't enough (in my humble opinion)--but hey, at $30 apiece you could buy half a dozen and still spend only a tenth of what a Tempur-Pedic mattress would cost you. At home I sleep on four layers of these inexpensive viscoelastic pads, and it's the most comfortable bed I've ever had--including the super high-tech Select Comfort "Sleep Number" mattress that I spent nine hundred bucks on.Andy Baird :-)

This was our first experience with that type of mattress. We thought it was worth the money. We use it in our travel trailer and when we get our 26MB we will use one in it. Based on our experience with the topper and the fact that we needed a new mattress for home, we purchased a Tempurpedic mattress. It is very expensive but both Jerri and I feel that it was worth the expense. There were other visco-elastic mattresses for sale on the internet including Knox Foam but we decided on the Tempurpedic because we purchased it locally and it would be easier to return if we did not like it.Norm and Jerri

Normally people are more allergic or affected to carpet out gassing. They normally always tell people with allergies to get foam pillows and beds and most of the "non-allergenic" mattress covers have urethane foam in them. How do you stay in a RV if he's allergic to foam out gassing? I wonder how long it will out gas before he can sleep on it? I think the Tempurpedic is the best mattress on the market today and well worth the price if you consider what a good nights sleep is worth in terms of your health and other things. If you amortize the cost over just the warranty period of 20yrs it works out to very little and a good nights sleep is well worth that cost and more.I really feel sorry for you about your dilemma!Mike

The up side is that after thousands of uses they hold their shape and don't become all saggy like many other MH.
