Coach battery failure mode... info
On our recent short trip, no shorepower, had our coach batteries fail, and the issue was one that is common with flooded-cell batteries of this type. To be specific, one of our 7.5 yr old Trojans developed a shorted cell, so the pair read 10.2V after in use overnight. At the end of a full day of solar charging, voltage was at normal, but that included a lot of surface charge with no 'beef' behind it. In the middle of watching a movie after dark, the TV started doing some strange things, and when I checked the battery monitor, it read 11.5V. The 10.2V I read in the morning was stable, even when turning on lights and fans, etc. This is symptomatic of the bad cell being shorted, while the rest of the cells are in acceptable condition and providing plenty of current capacity. Luckily, the fridge electronics still function properly at this voltage.
