Greasing the Ball Joints

"How frequently should I add grease?"

When changing our LD's oil (every 5000 miles  running Mobil 1 ), the ball joints get two small pumps of the grease gun each, you don't want to overdo it and blow out the seals. Also lube the other grease fittings at every oil change. A little bit is all it takes, more is not better.

This week, I'm going to buy a grease gun so that I can add this step to our maintenance schedule.  When I was a kid, I worked in a gas station and I would add grease until the old grease was squeezed out.   Our LD has rubber seals and I want to be very certain about adding new grease.  You've suggested two (2) small pumps.   In effect, I should watch the seal and if it expands just a bit, then it should have sufficient new grease?  Right?  And secondly.  Are any of the standard brands of grease adequate ... STP, Mobil, Lucas?

Thanks so much for help on this matter.

Old school grease fittings were lubed until grease came out.
Today the fittings are sealed better so they only need a couple pumps of grease, at each oil change.
If you have not already installed zerks fittings in the lower and upper ball joints, do so.

Get a full size grease gun that uses 14-oz tubes, its cheaper per ounce and provides a wider range of greases, compared to the smaller tubes. I have used Mobil One grease on our LD since new.  Any brand name chassis grease should be fine.
