John either will rebuild your trans or ship one to your shop.
He alone does all the builds.

I hope not to experience a failed transmission, but, if it happens, John Wood in beautiful downtown Holtville, the carrot capitol of the world, will get another customer!  ;)

I just spoke with John, if you are broken down and in need he tries to ship rebuilt transmissions ASAP, around 5 days anywhere in the country. Otherwise he needs a few months lead time. A great one man shop!

When John rebuilt our LD's transmission in April, I spent two days and nights inside his large yard, where several other auto shops are located. I noticed he had dozens of cores but didn't appear to have any built transmissions.
When asked, he told me that each transmissions is built to order for the particular vehicle. A transmission for a V-8 diesel pickup is built differently than one for a V-10 gasoline-powered motorhome. There are major differences in the valve bodies and torque converters.
Once he know what you need, he has the needed parts on hand.

Personally, if possible, I would have the entire job job in scenic Holtville. I preferred to have the person who rebuilt the transmission install and test drive it. It eliminates a lot of potential problems if if is installed by a different shop.
Try to have it done during the winter, the weather can be outstanding.
Take your toad with you, there isn't much to see or do in Holtville. It is however the town where my great-grandparents homesteaded, just after the turn of the nineteenth century, and where my grandparents lived. 
I hadn't been back there in 40 years and could not identify anything. The town's founders had planted hundred of trees and I remember huge shade tree all around town. Since, all the trees have died and have not been replaced.
You can't go home.

A few things to look at regarding Ford parts dates:

Deciphering Ford Parts Date Codes - FORDification.com

Ford Part Numbers, Casting Numbers, and Date Codes



These mention mostly casting date codes, not stickers.  But if you can find some numbers on the casting itself, you can probably decode them with the above info.  Then use that to reinforce or discount the sticker date. Sticker codes may be decodeable in a similar manner as castings, I suppose.  It also could be that the sticker shows a rebuild date instead of original build date.  Either way, casting decoding will help.
