Issues with old LD's?
Hi all,
Considering a class C and really feel LD is only way to go due to quality, love the floorplans and clean body look etc, mainly quality though. Found a really nice condition 1986, says 21 foot but I don't see 21 listed on NADA for 1986 (I see M-20 or M-22- maybe one of those is actually the 21 footer?) it has the rear bath and couch in rear. very clean inside and out, owner states everything works perfect, new tires, less than 100 hours on generator, chevy 350 engine, 83k miles. We will be using it for local beach trips, tailgating our kids games (family of 4), and maybe occasional trips along the coast, but not anticipating any cross country or really long trips at this time. What advice does anyone have, do the older models have certain issues to look for (owner states no roof or cab over leaks ever). Should I definitely find a local RV shop to do inspection even if it all looks good/runs and drives good etc? Thanks for any input!

Ian

"Found a really nice condition 1986..."

So many red flags here I couldn't begin to count... too few hours on generator would be a deal killer for me.  :(  :o  $$$$$$$

Hello and welcome Ian.

Assuming you have read the Lazy Daze companion and other resources permalinked at the top of the forum? Excellent information there about years and models.

Your question is one that sparks valuable input from other owners, and there are many, many threads available here on this topic. Unfortunately I can't think of a good search term to bring them all up, since most are discussions around specific used LDs and specific problems.

I would say to start searching under "rot" "leaks" "end caps".

Unless you want a big, costly, time consuming project RV, most here advise to stay away from the old models with windows over the cab. A check of the Pocket Guide linked at the top of the forum shows that these leak prone windows disappeared in the mid 1990 models.

As for other leak and rot issues, I took the approach of rebuilding a '92 with a few big leaks. The cost of my time is free, and tearing down and rebuilding the entire rear end was "fun".

Old coaches' appliances fail on all RVs. Refrigerator, hot water heater, furnace, LP tank and plumbing, inverter/charger, plumbing, windows all age and fail eventually.

There is probably an inverse cost curve for operating an RV as it ages, but I doubt it ever equals the cost of new.

great feedback thank you! When I went to see it was in not near the condition it looked in the online ad, and was evidence of a cab leak so I passed

You will find your experience is the norm when it come to old LDs.
There are a few of them in great shape but most have serious issues, many times unseen until later.
It's tough to get into RVing cheaply, even tougher to keep it cheap.
