What comes first, the chicken or the egg . . .
. . . or in this case, the RV or the toad?

We are getting closer to our financial goal of buying a well-loved Lazy Daze (estimated arrival, some time next year).  But we also are thinking to buy a toad to pull behind it (we are targeting a used Forester at his point in time).  Since both vehicles are coming out of the same big wad of cash (we don't like to finance toys), which should we buy first?

Please help me decide!

If you ran across a good deal on a toad that was already set up for towing I would jump on that. Especially, if you have a use for the vehicle in the interim.

I keep trying to talk Gayle into selling the LD and our Forester but not getting anywhere at the moment.

Since you know the parameters of which vehicles are suitable for "toads", you can jump on anything suitable as the year goes along.  Is this to be a separate vehicle from your newly-purchased ?Outback?  Or will you be trading one for the other?

Naturally, an appropriate Lazy Daze (or even one approaching appropriate) might be more difficult to find, so basically, the same advice holds true.  If the appropriate Lazy Daze appears, but you are not quite ready (i.e. not enough cash), you might want to look at bridge financing for a minimum time, just so you don't lose the vehicle.  On the other hand, you might find another, better one later on.  Nothing is certain.

Since both units are pretty narrow as far as suitability, you may need to just draw a line in the sand and say "from this day forward, we are open to acquiring one or both vehicles, no matter the fiscal circumstances".  But only you can decide when and where to draw that line.

Except for the 31-footer (which I understand is unsuitable for your homestead), any Lazy Daze model would be capable of towing any manny tranny Forester, and vice versa.  So, really, the order of purchase seems to me to be fluid.  Just grab whichever brass ring swings by first.

If cash available dictates everything, then you might want to be sure that you have sufficient wherewithal to get the perfect Lazy Daze, if/when that opportunity pops up.  There is more leeway for a suitable toad, whereas the Lazy Daze of your dreams may be more elusive.

HiLola-

Ed ("Traxless") and I hang out over on iRV2, where they maintain a classified section, with a subsection for toads for sale. Here's the link.

That said, and in the spirit of "Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers," long-time co-hosts of NPR's "Car Talk": "The cheapest car to own is the one you already have." If you can convert and tow your existing car, that's often the better plan.

Thank you for the link, Mark, much appreciated!  I should probably join iRV2 to see what's happening over there.  Unfortunately, neither one of our present cars is towable without trailering so we'll need to purchase a vehicle.

Judie, we plan on keeping the newly purchased Outback for our frequent longer trips to visit family.  We'll be selling a little Kia that we use for running around town and that's what we'll use the toad vehicle for as well. Thank you for your post!

Jim, thank you for your insight and let me know if you make any headway with Gayle regarding the Forester!   :)
