1990 26MB Corona
1990 LAZY DAZE 26' MIDBATH

I just drove 1 1/2 hours to look at this rig.  As inexperienced as I am, the chronic leaking and wood rot around the bottom of the back window, with water staining in the plywood under the left couch, peeling wallpaper in storage areas and soft spots at the back and left side window, were all very apparent. The owner stated he didn't notice.  2 years or longer without any kind of sealing.  It smelled a little musty when he first opened the door, but it quickly disappeared.

Thanks to all of you here, despite my disappointment, I walked away.  This is similar to the leaky rig in Santa Barbara. 14k for that one too.

I don't understand how sellers can allow a prospective buyer to go out of their way, spend time and money to see a leaky rig.  This seller thinks this rig is worth 14k even with the extensive wood rot.  He said a lot of people want it.  Not me.  I'm looking for a shorter rig anyway.

It shows you that you have to dig in and look at the LD very closely, which you apparently did. This one shows quite well in the photos, appears to be clean, and even looks like it may have been repainted. Was it? Front faux windows are unfaded.

I don't think it's been repainted. He said he's kept it covered but, he's only had it 2 years. He said he bought it from the original owner.  The water intrusion and rot were very easy to see.  He told me the front vent leaked from the roof when he sprayed it directly. I pointed out that shouldn't happen. I noted what looked like black mold spots in the inside cover over the front vent. He said it wasn't, but the black spots were hard to miss and they weren't wet spots. The air conditioner doesn't work. I forgot his reason for that.  He was forthright about not sealing the roof, windows, etc since he bought it and I appreciated that.  He built a neat drawer that slides under the left couch, only useable when the bed is down. but I think that's a neat idea.  Big lesson here too; lift up all cushions, bedding, rugs, etc.

I walked away because of things all you wonderful folks have taught me.  You've saved me thousands.  Thank you.

Some sellers are ethical, candidly disclose known warts and issues, and attempt to fairly price the rig that they're trying to sell. Some aren't and don't, figuring that, sooner or later, the universe will provide a gullible, inexperienced, and overeager buyer who has done little or no "red flag" homework.  And, more often than not, I believe, a "less than straightforward" seller's hopes are rewarded because s/he does manage to unload a clapped out, leaky beater rig for an inflated price. Seller= :D . Buyer= :o

Good that you didn't get snookered; keep looking and learning!

Is the 'leaky' rig you mentioned in Santa Barbara the one on Craig's List --- blue 22ft TK?

I've realized that, the only way to truly understand the sage words from everyone here, is to look at a few rigs with the intention of -not- buying.  After seeing a few rigs, I understand so much more and so much more clearly.  Seeing the issues detailed in the forums, illustrated in real life, has had an enormous effect on my overall understanding.

Well, to be fair, the ad wasn't up long.  He said a lady called him from waaayyyy out of state and wanted him to drive it to her.  Joan is right, I know.  Someone will come along and not think anything of the red flags.  That's fine.  I'm not here to save the world.  I'm just glad it's not me!:-)

When I saw it, it was full to the brim with stuff including food... everything.  It was dark, musty.  I thought maybe someone was living in it.  I've decided that if there aren't pictures of the ceiling, corners, up close and personal, I'm not going to go look at it.  I also don't feel comfortable with folks who won't post more pictures online, but are willing to email them to me.  Every time I ask them to post them instead of email them, I never hear from them again.

And the craigslist ad is gone, deleted by author.  Wonder if it sold?  Or maybe they read this forum?

I forgot to mention.  I noticed in one of the pictures there appeared to be a dent or some anomaly at the top right of the back side left window.  Well, it's buckled there.  That's at least one place where the water is getting in.  I don't know if the water or the buckle came first, but there are water stains on the plywood under the couch on that side, along with rot. Weird how the aluminum is buckled.  Couldn't figure that out.  I pointed it out to him though and told him that was another spot where the water was getting in.  He didn't say a word.

I don't think so. The link in the original post was from Corona (1990 26MB Corona) and was an MB, no #s on the cabover. It showed the rear couches with beds made up. The carpeting up front had been replaced with faux wood. Paint was better, etc. The SB LD is a '93.

When we were looking for a used LD, back in 1995, most had water damage or had been smoked in.
After inspecting a couple dozen, we found a clean 1983 that needed mechanical work.
None were anywhere near perfect but both of us insisted on a intact coach, you need good bones to start with.

Anything mechanical can be replaced, most parts are available.
A damaged coach is a total unknown and a high quality repair can be much higher than what seems possible.

Larry, I couldn't agree more!   I'd rather deal with a bad transmission than the abyss of structural damage.

I did give up, sort of.  I seem to keep finding leaky rigs being sold by unscrupulous sellers.  Being a novice with RVing, never mind LD's, I'm fairly tentative about buying a rig on my own. I'm just not sure I'm qualified to buy a used one.  That said, I still look.  I just love the darn things!:-)
