Toilet hand spray leak
My toilet sometimes makes a suction sound for a few seconds after flushing which comes from the hand sprayer.  This has been happening for a few months but once recently the hand sprayer was dripping water.  I called Dometic/Sealand and got connected to someone at Ardemco Marine in Costa Mesa.  He did not have a probability weather it was the hand sprayer just not always shutting off completely or the  vacuum breaker not working correctly.  So I will probably replace both which can be purchased as one assembly.

The toilet will hold water, but it will leak through the ball valve seals after a few minutes, so I think it is time to replace the seals.

Since I will have to remove the toilet from the pedestal I am thinking maybe I should replace the ball valve/shaft/cartridge.  This is recommended when doing the seals on the Ardemco website, but the guy I talked did not think it is needed.  I am pretty sure I have a brass shaft, not plastic-it looks like brass if I scratch it.  But I am wondering does the spring cartridge fail often?  I think this has been replaced at some time more than 3 years ago because there are replacement instructions on a seperate small piece of paper in my owner's manual.

My spring failed two years ago.  Pretty easy to replace. I have found if you give the seals a good cleaning, the white vinegar treatment a couple of times and lube with Pledge, you should get a good seal.  If not then since you are attaching it anyway, do the replacement or even consider an entire replacement depending on age and use.  Ours is an 04 MB with 60K miles.  FWIW

Hi Jay,

A couple of years ago my hand sprayer was also leaking at the handle. I was told that the hose and hand sprayer was one piece by my rv repair center. I told them that I had disconnected the hand sprayer from the hose. They could only sell me the one piece system. So I went to Home Depot and bought a hand sprayer that looked much like the original. I tried it and it worked.

This year I also had to replace the vacuum breaker. I was told that it was an easy job but you had to take the toilet off first. Since I had to buy that part I also ordered the seals and replaced them at the same time. My only problem was that I did not note how the steel band and plastic clamp went together. After several attempts and leaks I found a UTUBE video that did show how to put it back together. You attach the two piece plastic clamp with the front sections together and then use the steel band to bring the back part together. I was trying to keep them separate and come together at the same time. Wrong.

Also, there are two seals, a small one that is marked This Side Up and a larger one that does not say. The small one goes in first on the bottom and then the larger one. But the two small holes in the seals must match up. After that, no problems.

My two cents worth - if you are going to remove the toilet to work on the vacuum breaker, replace the seals.  I did a post on this in the LD Companion that might be helpful on the seals, particularly with regard to cleaning and re-assembly.  Note that some models use seals with two small holes, while other models have an indent at the edge but no holes.  Get the right seals for your model of toilet.

As to the main issue, the leaking hand sprayer, mine, unlike Kevin's, is bonded to the hose.  I would have to replace the assembly, not just the hand sprayer.

Regarding the ball valve assembly, I thought like you, when I first pulled the toilet to change the seals.  So, I ordered the assembly.  I still have it, unused, stored.  I am using my original ball valve and assembly, with no need to replace it.  I DO need to clean it quite well every time I change the seals.  It tends to accumulate salts, forming an encrustation.

Good luck with the work.
