New owner
Hello: I'm a new owner of a 1981 Chevy LazyDaze 22ft bed/table in rear with overhead sleeper cab- electrical seems to work- she runs great but a little hot- has 63k on her 350 engine- I know nothing about this vehicle and need any advice on servicing and operating her. I'm going through her mechanically as I write this.  Please offer any advice and knowledge as I am a complete newbie- not sure if fridge or stove works - water pump light works but haven't put water in tank yet. Thanks!

Welcome Tommytrex1, and congratulations on your new Lazy Daze.

Your question leaves an infinite number of possible answers, so may I suggest :

Learn the model name you have, the Lazy Daze Companion and Lazy Daze Pocket Guide will help, both will turn up with a web search. As far as I know all LDs have a bed over the cab. Yours is one of the oldies. Post photos, they will help. For example, we don't know if your fridge is original or a replacement, is it a three way model?

Obtain a Lazy Daze manual for your model. Read it, it is entertaining and amazingly helpful.

Get a Chiltons manual for your model Chevy.

After reading these resources, or while reading them, try running every system, light, switch. See what they do, whether they work. Note problems and ask for more specific help when you know the issues.

The Chevy 350 is known as an anemic power plant for this coach. It's gonna be slow and run hot. Don't overload it or push it too hard in the passes.

Sorry to be so vague, but you asked for any help.

Hi Tommy, and congrats on your "new" LD! I used to have the same model except it was an '85, same chassis and engine combo. Good advice by Paul to obtain and read as much documentation as you can and inspect the various coach and chassis systems. Be sure to carefully inspect the propane system for leaks before using any of the appliances, heater, etc.

If in good shape, it will take you just about anywhere you want to go, but it will go slow!

Hello and thank you for the responses:)  I have all the original manuals and luckily maintenance records. Lights work, AC works when hooked up to electric so that's a good sign. I'm already dropping $500 on repairs to engine- vacuum hoses, fan clutch, thermostat, plug wires, fuel filter, tune up and smog. Now I have to deal with storage as Los Angeles is so strict on parking- any advice on that will also be appreciated. I believe my heater is missing and don't think I have a generator in this model. I definitely need new tires and wonder what I'm looking at for replacement costs for all of them. Any advice on places to get replacement parts besides factory would also be helpful. I need an escape hatch lid over sleeper. Oh and fridge is an original Dometica freezer on top fridge on bottom but I noticed a tube in the fridge compartment gets very hot when turned on. Thanks- Tommytrex1

Hi, Tommy,
"Los Angeles" covers a lot of real estate. Re storage, where are you located?  We live on the West side and store in Marina Del Rey. Pricey, but there are very few options for those of us without big driveways. -- Jon

Hi Tommy. Congratulations on your new purchase. That is an absorption refrigerator and the hot part is probably the aptly named boiler tube. Remember to only run the refrigerator when it is level. Tires would need to be load range 'D' or better, hopefully 16" and not 16.5. The transition to 16" was right around '81 and I hear that 16.5" tires are really hard to find with limited choices. The factory in Montclair is your friend. They could still carry parts for your 35 year old motorhome that are just a memory for most people. Their prices have always seemed very reasonable to me. They do carry new vent lid covers for the cab-over sleeping area. Many people have put in Wave propane heaters because they run quieter and don't use electricity. I know of at least one coach owner that removed their old heater that didn't work..... Hmmn about an '81 Chevy Twin King. Has this one got an orange outside color scheme? Good luck with your repairs. Happy camping. RonB

Don't know where you are in LA, I kept my airstream at Mt Olive storage in Duarte. They're right where the 210 and 605 meet, so it was good jumping off point for the mountains and they have a place you can wash your rig, dump station and air for tires. Negative of course is you don't have 24 hr access they lock the gates at some point so you have to time your arrival. There are several lazy daze there.

The Lazy Daze Mothership is a good place for replacement parts- I find their prices more than fair. Tires! I love new tires, just not paying for them. No genny? No problem. You save a lot of weight without it.
