Painted Rims Update September 29, 2016, 07:54:44 pm This question is mainly for Andy. How are your painted wheels holding up? I was planning to do this this summer but other issues got my attention. Still on my list of 'must do'.

I'll need to wash the dust off to be certain, but as far as I can see there's no peeling, chipping, etc. I still prefer the less flashy silver-painted look to the shiny chrome simulators, and of course the practical advantages are many.

Re: Painted Rims Update Reply #5 – October 04, 2016, 08:57:59 am I painted the spoke rims for my first car - a TR4A - when I was 17. The absolute key to success is to thoroughly wash/scrub every micro speck of grease, debris, etc off with a light abrasive. Make sure the rim is completely dry, then prep the wheel exactly as Andy shows in one of his photos. That is, first tape off the wheel, then apply backing (in my case paper vs foil), then come back around for a second taping.Once the rim is completely exposed, lay the wheel down flat and paint away. I believe I used one can of spray paint per two wheels, first a high quality aluminum-silver finish, then a clear coat. With the wheel is lying flat, it's really easy to lay down a nice cloud of paint to let it settle perfectly.When my 17 son bought his '99 Nissan Frontier from my brother (an old work truck), the first thing I showed how to spruce it up was, you guessed it, paint the rims. He must have picked up his thoroughness somewhere, because he followed the same basic steps and the job turned out perfect.

In general, though, the wheels don't look much different now than they did in the photos Joan pointed to, other than a layer of dust.

Good luck with the engine sensors, all those little computers are great till they're not. I often wish I had the OBDII capabilities of the V-10, but sometimes enjoy my old pushrod 460.
