The first time I had this cooling fan clutch engage, I was climbing a grade in the desert, heavily loaded (in a Powerstroke 6.0), and I pulled off the road to rest it, sure I had damaged my engine.  A quick internet search on the cellphone as it cooled gave me reassurance.  That fan system is very effective in it purpose, both when not running and when it kicks in. It just scares the heck out of one in a rig new to them.

Now that I think back on that auxiliary cooling function (it has been 6 years since I sold the LD) it was probably the engine temperature gauge that dropped quickly once the fan kicked in.  Larry is correct.  I worried about transmission temperatures until I purchased a Scan Gauge.  After a few trips I decided the transmission never got hot enough to worry about but that did not stop me from watching it anyway.
