What replacement tires?
What size and brand tire does Lazy Daze recommend to replace the aged-out original Michelin tires on my E-450 2011 31TB?

Many thanks!

Hi Bob,

According to my 2015 manual on page 102, the factory states that replacing tires should follow the sticker on the drivers side cab door jam sticker that matches the size and load rating for your specific chassis.

Using another size and load rated tire is not recommended. The Michelin LT225/75R16 is what is on my 27' RB. Yours may or may not be the same, but that's what came on mine.

The tire size choice is a 225/75R/16 load range E light truck tire. If you want a "highway tread" steel sidewall tire, the choices are Goodyear's G949 and G947 or a Michelin XPS Rib. Some owners, particularly those with rigs that are loaded to GVWR, like the stiffer sidewall and the "highway" tread pattern, and some don't. If you want a non-steel sidewall light truck tire (same size and load rating), a few manufacturers offer a load range E light truck tire with a M+S "all season" tread pattern; my choice would be to stick with the Michelin light truck tire in the appropriate size and load range, but YMMV. You may want to look at light truck tires from other manufacturers, but I suggest making sure that you read the tire specs carefully to make the best choice for your rig.

Additional suggestions: When you do decide on the "best" tire for you,  have the tire shop order fresh, date-matched tires; the "freshness window" is up to you, but I go with nothing older than about 6 weeks. Remove the wheel covers before going to the tire shop. Inspect each tire before they install them. Install the tires date side out. Check the final installation.

After responding to a question on tire replacement, I looked at websites of several tire manufacturers (not dealers), i.e., Michelin, Goodyear, Kumho, Toyo, Bridgestone, B.F.Goodrich, and Cooper. I used the manufacturer's name and "light truck" as a designation  when searching for direct links to the appropriate pages on each website, as the home page may not indicate clearly (or at all) where to find the information needed on each tire. (I also searched using the manufacturer's name and the tire application and size desgination "LT225/75R/16E" with varied results.) My experiences were as follows:

Most of the tire manufacturers' sites were focused on buzzwords, colorful graphics, and many vaguely-worded "use designations" and tabs/links which seemed designed to keep the user wandering around on the site for as long as possible while delaying or preventing the discovery of any useful information. "Reviews" and links to dealers were abundant; spec charts were harder to find. (No comments on the quality of the products, but Toyo's site offered the most straightforward navigation to an appropriate application; Goodyear's site required the greatest amount of "drilling" to uncover a tire or tires of the potentially correct application.)

If you're looking for replacement tires for your LD and want to diligently investigate brands which might work best for you, you may want to set aside some research time!   ;)

The best website I have found for researching tires is the 'Tire Rack'.
Same size tires, of various brands, can be compared and the customer ratings seen.
