Hwy. 242 Oregon
Who has driven "Highway" 242, west of Sisters, Oregon, in their LD? The Mountain Directory warns that the road is very narrow and "hairpinny"; those descriptions are seldom enough to deter me from taking a road if the scenery/views are worth it, but "been there, done that" reports are always welcome! TIA.

I have driven it. I had driven it before in a car. A few years after that I got confused and drove it in the LD towing. I really wish I had not been confused. It's gets really tight west bound after the fire observatory. Your skills may be fine, it's the oncoming drivers who may get spooked seeing the big rig.

Not much to see. Lava and then dense forest.

From Eugene we took 126 east then north all the way to 20, then 20 east to Sisters. Not a bad drive and a nice gradual climb going that way, as we were warned to avoid 242.

We successfully drove highway 242 in our 22 ft multiplan about 10 years ago.  As I recall, there are several hairpin turns and rock outcroppings overhanging the road at the western end of the road a few miles east of where it intersects with highway 126.  I was very happy I did not meet an oncoming vehicle at these points.  I would not drive the road in our current 27 ft MB.  I remember the drive as very pretty and interesting.  Definitely worth doing in a car.  Alternatively, a motorhome could be safely driven west from Sisters on highway 242 to the interesting and scenic Dee Wright Observatory.  At that point, it would be best to return to Sisters rather than continuing west.

I have been over 242 several times in my car.  I love the drive - in my car.  I would not risk it with my MB.  As mentioned, there are some really tight turns and rock outcroppings.  It would be very easy to make a small mistake and have sharp lava tear a hole in the aluminum side of the rig.

We've driven it both ways when we had our MB. Not towing. An easy drive as long as you watch where you're going. There is a worthwhile stop on top at a visitor center, of sorts. Don't recall the exact name. Good walk through lava fields. Dee Wright Observatory I just noticed from another post.
If you start at Sisters, the rock wall is in the other guys side. That way you just get the sheer drop off without risking scraping your paint.
Look for a great boondocking spot right here. Your own private lake.
