Question: used Motorcraft the first couple years with our 04 RK. Took it to Walmart for oil change, told them to use Motorcraft and they send conventional oil instead. I almost freaked out as I heard this type of change was a big no-no. I did not notice any adverse effects so I stayed with the conventional these last eight or nine years as I didn't want to temp fate.

The question: what is the thought on going back to Motorcraft? I had read that changing between synth and conventional should be avoided.

Thanks for your thoughts.

As long as it's all detergent oil, no issue with switching back and forth. Back when non-detergent oil was common, it was dangerous to switch to detergent oil, because sludge in the pan could come loose and damage the engine. The solution was to drop the pan and clean it first. That goes back a long ways...

Note that synthetic oil differs from non-synthetic only in the refinement process.

In addition to what Steve said.
The Ford standard is spelled out in a doc WSS-M2C153-H.  To many people, any oil that is not Synthetic is regular oil.  Many oils are a blind of synthetic and regular.  There is a good chance that your oil meets the standard and that is easy enough for you to check.
If the oil is indeed non-synthetic, I would make the change to using an oil like the Motorcraft  blended the manual calls for.
