Ozone water purifier
Hi,

I purchased a Clear Water Air, Water Purifier from Amazon to use to purify the water in my water tank. The problem is the bubbler. It is 1/2" in diameter and 1 1/2" in length. The bubbler fits through the water intake tube but doesn't pass through the 90 Degree fitting into the top to the water tank. Has anyone else experienced this? I have a mid bath and I can see the top my tank when I take out the second drawer beside the sink in the kitchen. There are two tubes, one for the water filler and the smaller one is for the overflow. One thought is to undo the smaller tube and insert the bubbler into the tank that way and insert the hose to the bubbler though the overflow hose. Not sure if this would work. I have a question into the supplier to see if I can cut the bubbler to see if it would fit through the filler elbow or if they have a small length bubble. Any help would be appreciated.

You are the test pilot for a new product, not having seen anyone here use such device.
Have you had problems with water before or are you using dubious supplies of water?

In over twenty years of LDing, we have never had a water problem since only city or treated campground water has been used.
Many pre-filter the water to remove sediment.
We use a deck mounted faucet that is connected to a high efficiency cartage filter for all our drinking and cooking water. It removes bacteria and cyst, as well as many other harmful substances, while not requiring any power use.

Do be aware that many plastics and rubber materials are vulnerable to the destructive effects of ozone, it may damage parts of your LD's water system.
It would be worth the time researching this to see if you LD's water system contains sensitive materials before installing the ozone system.

Hi Larry,

Thank you for your reply and concerns. I appreciate your comments about ozone and the link to the ARB. I have read articles on the pros and cons of ozone and the precautions one must take. Most articles talk about ozone in the air and the damage that it can cause. In my case I want to use it for water purification and the device I want to use (Clear Water Ozone) pumps ozone into the water. I first got interested in this after reading the "Poop Sheets by shred", article 6 Water Treatment. I realize that the article was written in 2002. I use a whole house Omni 10" carbon wrapped sediment filter with 5 micron for all water coming into the RV. I used to have a Britta filter on the kitchen faucet but I understand that these are almost useless so I got rid of it. My wife is more sensitive to water taste than I am so I needed to do something. So after some research I decided on the ozone machine. I need to do more study on the downstream potential damage to the LD plumbing and plastics (I didn't think of that). I understand that ozone dissipates after a short period of time and changes back to oxygen.

I did get an answer to my original question from the supplier. He also has an rv and had the same problem. His answer was to fill the water tank to full and then slowly add water until the tank overflows a little so that there is water between the filler and the 90 degree elbow. Then insert the bubbler into the filler tube until it reaches the elbow (about 9" to 10"). Then turn the ozone machine on. After 6 hours I turned it off and took the bubbler out and it was still wet and part of the ozone supply hose was also still wet (so the bubbler was  in the water the whole time). The problem is that you need to be camping where there is water and electricity available as it takes between 5 - 6 hours to ozone 55 gallons of water. This machine puts out 300mg/hr. The water tastes great.

Again I appreciate all your advise and help you have given me. I am still learning.

One other point, ozone is for killing things in the water but does little to clean the water of other contaminants.
A high end water filter, such as a Sea Gull, would provide a higher level protection, without the hassles of using an ozone generator and it uses no power. There is next to nothing to go wrong other than periodic changes of the cartridge.
Amazon.com : Seagull IV X-1F Drinking Water Purifier - Marine Model :...

We use a Omnipure QCR cartridge filter and faucet, bought at the RV Water Store. It has similar specifications to the Sea Gull but at a much lower price.
We saw no need for the marine-rated filter.

Larry and Joan,

With the additional input and further consideration I decided to return the ozone machine. You are correct that it will destroy the bacteria but not other things in the water. The instruction from the seller says that the bubbler should be 18" into the tank which is not possible on the LD, I only got about an inch or two. That also bothered me. Also the time it takes to purify the water tank is also a deciding factor. Ok when I am at home (not too much worry about the water here) but not while camping. So, thanks for the link to the water filter company. I will research their filters and systems. I currently have a whole house Omni canister so I can just get a better combination filter or I could go to the two canister system, one for the sediment filter and the other for the carbon filter.

I greatly appreciate the help and support that both of you and others give to this site. It sure makes it easy to ask questions and get solutions, especially for me.

I believe that this is the "RV water store" that Larry refers to; it's an excellent source of information and products, and the business owner answers questions promptly.

RV Water Filter Store: Standard Filter Canisters for Whole RV

I was going to ask Larry for the website or address. I did find RV Water Filter Store as you did  JCT but I didn't see the filter and faucet Larry mentioned "Omnipure QCR cartridge filter and faucet" .. Larry, if you can confirm if this is the site and the name of the unit you have. I remember yours under the sink and would like to get one like you have.  Thanks in advance Larry..

Hi Jo,

This is Kevin. I have been looking too. They are here at the RV Water Store under the heading Systems and Components, sub heading Drinking Water Systems, then Replaceable Cartridge and here is the link RV Water Filter Store: Standard Filter Canisters for Whole RV

I sent the ozone machine back and am also looking at this Omnipure system.

Kevin,

Thanks for finding this. I remember seeing Larry's and thought, I want one of these when I get a LD. I carry bottles of water around and that of course takes up room among other things. Reading what this filter takes out is awesome. Seems like this unit may be the one Kevin.  :)

Here's another option that doesn't involve drilling holes in your counter et al if you don't mind the filtration in small doses. You can get it for a lot less than shown here via Amazon or other places.

Hi LD Peeps,

Can someone tell me what the difference or upside / downside for a Filter Cartage w/Carbon vs Filter Cartage with out Carbon?  I noticed in the OmniPure Q series gives you a choice. Thanks in advance.. 8)

Carbon filters remove volatile chemicals that affect taste and odor. They will also trap some particle sizes.  The regular sediment particle filters trap most particles above a certain size.  For a given size sediment filter element the ones with the highest flow rate will only remove the larger size particles.  And there are filters that contain both carbon and sediment filter elements.  Generally speaking a good carbon filter will improve the taste of most public water.

Copied from the RV Water Store's website
The QSB cartridge is constructed of solid-block carbon with KDF. It has a 1-micron rating and will remove taste-and-odor contaminants, as well as giardia and cryptosporidium cysts. It is bacteriostatic, making it ideal for intermittent RV use.

The QCR cartridge combines a Doulton ceramic element and granular carbon to remove even more potentially harmful contaminants, including E. coli, salmonella, cholera, and shigella."

Both my wife and I have suffered from water bored illnesses, in our travels, and it's not fun.
To increase the potential fun factor, we want the most effective filter, for the cost, so we use the QCR cartridge.
