difference between "Dicor Self-Leveling Sealant" and "3M Marine Adhe

Hi all!

First, *many* thanks to all who participate in this forum. I'm learning SO MUCH from studying everyone's posts; I've repeatedly found answers to things I've wondered about in previous threads; and am grateful for the direct responses to my posts!

As regular maintenance, apparently it's time to reseal the roof on the 2002 LD MB we just bought, and I am confused as to the difference between Dicor Self-leveling Lap Sealant and 3M Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200. Are these for different purposes; or do folks have personal preferences? My apologies if this is a *really* dumb question. Someday I hope to be able to answer questions like you all! :)

3M 5200 marine "fast cure" sealant/adhesive is used to seal cracks/splits in the fiberglass parts of the LD, e.g., the end caps or any area where a "corner wrap" has come loose from the body, to seal around vents, and to seal around window frames. The product is not appropriate to seal the seams on the LD's roof.

I can't speak to how well the Dicor lap sealant would work; I haven't used it and I can't say whether it's appropriate for use on an aluminum roof. Many, if not most, who have had the roof resealed have either used Eternabond or had the job done at the factory.

If you're considering using a "lap sealant", you might want to call the LD factory and ask Vince what they're using now on the roof seams; it may be the Dicor or a similar product, but he could offer the best advice about what to use. Be advised that the factory does NOT like Eternabond because the product is *extremely difficult* to remove if they are asked to do a repair of a previously Eternabonded area.

Not sure about Dicor product but I've used 3M product successfully for our 2007 LD RB for resealing areas around windows, misc outlets, etc. I also used to seal up those thin stress cracks that appear on vertical corner pieces around the rv. Note: product has consistency of toothpaste when first applying it so pretty messy to work with.

Hi all! Thank you all for the clarifications, and thanks to Joan for the recommendation that I call Vince at the factory. I did so and wanted to share his "two cents":

I explained to him that we just purchased a 2002 LB MB, and that the person performing the inspection recommended we reseal the roof. The owner said he resealed it every two years and confirmed it was due.

I called a shop around here (Chicago), and they said they did not remove the old sealant for fear of damaging the roof. Instead, they scrubbed the old sealant and applied Dicor Self-Leveling sealant over the old sealant for $90/hr labor; $15/tube.

When I called Vince to ask about Dicor versus Eternabond and told him about the resealing of the roof, he groaned and asked if I really wanted to hear what he thought - LOL! He was with a customer, so when I called him back, he told me this:

It is true, he is not a fan of Eternabond, and says if he believed it worked, he would be using it at the factory. Another concern he has about Eternabond is that it is often used over old sealant rather than removing the old sealant. He believes this is the wrong way to do the job.

He also expressed concern about a roof being resealed every two years. He said the sealant used at the factory is expected to last 7-10 years.

Finally, he said his best recommendation was that we have the roof resealed at the factory while we are on a trip out west. He promised he was not just saying that to get more work, saying his shop was already full of rigs. But he said if we plan to keep the RV rather than use it and sell it in a year, he would highly recommend we bring it to the factory where they would strip out all the old sealant and use their product, with the expectation it would be done right and not have to be done again for 7-10 years, unless we decided to camp out in Death Valley for a summer. He did make an offhand reference to this being ~thousand dollar investment.

He was not familiar with Dicor, but said the product they are using at the shop is "Loctite PL S40" - and he couldn't give it enough high marks.

Very interested in others' thoughts, as well as direction to any resources about how to reseal a roof myself correctly. (The first video I watched showed someone putting a ton of caulk over old caulk and it ended up looking like a mess - but I don't know what I'm doing, so maybe that's just how it looks!?!?)

Note that the Dicor product is an EPDM sealant, designed for RVs with EPDM (rubber) coated roofs.

I will stay with Eternabond and Dicor. Works for me.
This true removing the original sealant makes the Eternabond look better, but it's looks only.

Generally, you don't want to use 3M5200 on anything you might want to take apart in the future.
3M4200 might be the one to use if you might want to separate the things you used it on.

Not sure about Dicor product but I’ve used 3M product successfully for our 2007 LD RB for resealing areas around windows, misc outlets, etc. I also used to seal up those thin stress cracks that appear on vertical corner pieces around the rv. Note: product has consistency of toothpaste when first applying it so pretty messy to work with.

I found your discussion with the factory about roof resealing to be interesting. I want to acknowledge that I don't have as much experience with motorhomes as others in this group. After reading various posts concerning roof seals, I decided that I should probably reseal the roof seams on our 2004 RK shortly after we acquired it four years ago. The original sealant appeared to be in good shape so I felt that a thorough cleaning, including some minor scraping and smoothing of high spots, would provide a good surface over which to apply Eternabond tape. I tested a short piece of the tape on some scrap aluminum and was pleased with the results. And yes, it would be very difficult to remove once applied. I was fairly confident that this would work well because the tape was wide enough to extend beyond the width of the sealant onto the metal roof surface. After carefully applying the EBond, I sealed the leading edges with a high quality polyurethane caulk.

Since applying the EBond, we have driven from NC to California and back four times as well as two trips into Canada. After each trip, I wash the LD, using soft brushes and a mop on the roof, after which I have inspected the EBond tape and found it to be in good condition. There are no signs that it is weakening or coming up and we have experienced no leaks. I am glad that I did not choose the option of removing the old sealant before applying the EBond tape. This seems to me to be along the lines of the old saying; "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I did not try to fix it. I did try to "improve" it. I am happy with it so far. I thought that others might like to know how this worked out.
