Winegard Razor Air Retrofit For Sensar Batwing
Yahoo Message Number: 159581
Winegard has offered for a while a retrofit replacement for the Sensar batwing antenna, called the Rayzar Air. Reviews seem generally positive, but I was wondering whether anyone in this group has tried it? I've generally been pleased with the batwing, but the head recently developed a crack in the mounting that seems to require replacement of the whole head. The Rayzar Air is not a batwing, but rather a flat paddle shaped antenna about 14x30". It is multidirectional in that it receives signals from both the front and the back, thus less tuning in certain situations. The replacement kit costs in the $40's, depending on vendor. Has anyone tried one? Thanks, Jon ('06 TK "Albatross")

Jon,

I have no idea if the Rayzar Air antenna has improved reception over the Sensar or not. Perhaps it does.

But, I would be concerned about the form factor. The Rayzar Air looks like a sail. Not a problem when deployed in still air, but if you have windy conditions say with gusts in the 30 to 40 mph range, I would be concerned about the forces on the roof mount. I've cranked down the Sensar antenna under those conditions. But, I could be overly cautious.

I had a similar concern, Alex. It wasn't clear whether, when deployed, it stuck up like a raised paddle or whether it ended up flat, like a horizontal board. I think it's the former, and that would definitely raise wind concerns. I didn't find any reviews, though, that discussed this, so perhaps it's not a problem. -- Jon

I saw one up at Moro Bay. It does have a sail factor to it. But it also looks like most of the mast is across it do it should be stable.

I had a crack in my batwing and instead of keeping the crank and replacing the batwing I went with the King Jack.

It does work just as well as the old one. I don't have to lower any mast.

The most I have to do is rotate it point forward in heavy cross winds when I forget.
