For the last couple of months, Larry, Judie and myself have been working on a plan to move LWALDRV from Yahoo Groups to a new website with a new operating platform. Rather than go into great detail in this message to you, I am pasting in a FAQ handout which I presented today to many of the approximately 100+ Lazy Dazers here at the Morro Bay get together. I am hopeful the FAQ will answer many of your initial questions about this group's future. Some of you will have more questions. I encourage you to post your questions here for all to see. I will answer them as I gather information. I should add that this plan was very favorably received by the group today. There is not a set launch timetable, but we would like to have things wrapped up by end of April. So, here's the info. All the dialog below is in the FAQ handout presented today.

This is wonderful news! We all know that Yahoo stinks in so many ways. When I was moderator of this group, I always hoped we'd someday find a way to ditch Yahoo, but the task was too much for my technical knowledge (and frankly, my energy level). Now our new moderators, plus Steve and Michelle have found a way to pull it off. Kudos and many thanks to all who are working on this project! I look forward to using the new forums.

I've been a Foretravel Forum lurker for several years and would agree with everything Steve and Michelle have said as reported by Chris. IMO their website gives the Foretravel Forum great flexible and the tools to manage and coordinate various kinds of information in a systematic fashion. I also look forward to using this new forum.

I am such and old dude anymore. I have always loved list servers and disliked Forums. They all seem to eat so much data, however I seem to be a part of a very small group. Of course if you went to the groups page is so similar to a forum, however a very bad one, I can see the desire for a better one. This looks as if it will be a very good interface for those preferring a forum, and maybe much better for most, I hope you manage a soothe transition.

Thanks Chris for the presentation at Morro Bay.

This change is SO welcome! The Foretravel forum is quite good, so I look forward to seeing "our" community on this new platform. So little good can be said about the Yahoo groups. With a modern forum I am looking forward to getting much more value without the hassle of trying to make Yahoo work on a mobile device.

Excellent news Chris. I advocated for this years ago and I think Steve mentioned the Foretravel site then. The then LD moderator squawked loudly about moving and knowing that I mixed with him like oil and water. I backed off. You have good people skills Chris and I am sure the migration will go smoothly.

After it settles down, I hope someone will see how The Companion could be folded into the new forum. It's a great resource, but it contains a few too many topics and the indexing leaves a lot to be desired. In short, we stuffed too much stuff into the bag.

This would be a really great move. I have been on the Foretravel forum since it was on Yahoo and the new forum that Steve & Michelle implemented is way better.

Hi Chris!

Excellent idea!

While relatively new to LD, I have some experience in forums, bulletin boards, etc. and have good to excellent computer skills, and have time available.

If there's anything I can do to assist with this project, please let me know...

Thanks much!

"After it settles down, I hope someone will see how The Companion could be folded into the new forum."

Absolutely, if folks want that Steve will incorporate it. The great Companion contents can be turned into a "wiki" (kind of an FAQ) and it's given Steve the idea for a "mod" (a forum add-on) to help "seed" wiki entries from the forum.

We're excited to help you make this your forum the way you want it!

I've been a user of ATT network products since the last millenium and Ma Bell was still split into the 7 RBOCs. As it reabsorbed them, each iteration had a new 'improved' product with a concurrent decrease in functionality, usability, and convenience. Yayhoo (pronounced akin to doodoo) is just the latest installment of 'how bad can we make it?'.

Will look forward to it.

I have been monitoring this group for many many years and I have seen throughout the years how Yahoo groups have become LESS user friendly when it used to be so easy to use. Moving this group away from Yahoo would be the best thing for this group in my opinion. I'm on board with it for sure!!!

I would urge caution Yahoogroups does leave a bit to be desired sometimes. But it is free, and it is always somebody else's fault (the latter being extremely important). Once you figure out how to work the search box, it actually does work.

If the board is managed and maintained by someone with a vested interest, it could get old very quickly. What happens if the board keepers just don't want to do it any more, at least not for free? Or, (perish the thought) buy SOB instead.

IOW, be careful what you wish for. There are 5,500 other folks you have to bring along.

We are as confident as we can be that your caution will not be fulfilled, Dave. Of course, we do not know what the future could bring. Actually, the "board keepers" (administrative hosts) bought an SOB, a Foretravel which replaced their LD some years ago. However, they continued as members of this forum. They still have an affinity for Lazy Daze, its products and forum members.

We moderators believe that the benefits of moving to a new platform outweigh the risk you mention.

Thanks for your comment, Martha. The consensus is that this will be a good move for our Lazy Daze group. We will work to make it as painless as possible.

As for progress, I am traveling until the end of the month and will be much more active in the transition process when I get home and have more time to attend to details.

Chris, If there is any thing a non tech type can do to help (load a test page with data or sample entries from the other side of the country for example) let me know. I am retired and can fit my schedule to others. I'm not good on the devolopment stuff but fairly good at following instructions.

Thanks to you and the developers for taking this project on.

John, thanks for the offer, but for now we are not in the testing stage. I believe at some point a test function will be available for folks to try out before the launch.

We'll definitely have folks test driving the new forum to get familiar with it before turning it loose, kick the tires, come up with questions about operation, etc. Steve is working behind the scenes (pay no attention to the man behind the curtain ;-) ) to get things set up robustly on a server that's a step up from the one Foreforums has been on - more storage and more bandwidth since this is a larger group. We are working with Chris, Larry, and Judie to make sure the needs of the LWALD group are met.

This is great news! I belong to a number of different forums that use a similar format and they are much easier to use. Especially when it comes to following topics you are most interested in. Or ignoring topics you have no interest in. The way the signatures work and user info next to each post (normally you see someone's location, join date and number of posts) makes it incredibly useful in helping people answer questions.

The bottom line of a forum, is to disseminate information. The new format can do that so much better. Looking forward to the change.

Great stuff ! As a member of both Forforums and LWALD, there is no real comparison, Yahoo always sucked, then after they changed a couple of years back I almost quit visiting. Great move !
