3M 5200 Fast Cure sealant sources

None of the local-to-me Home Depot, Lowe's, OSH, Ace, or other stores carried 5200 in the 3 oz. tube, if they had it at all, it was the 10 oz. cartridge. Amazon's price for the 3 oz. tube is $16.99; having Prime eliminates the shipping charge, but the product cost is still high.

I needed a new supply of 3 oz. tubes, in my experience, the most convenient size for many sealing jobs; the best price I found was $13.55 per 3 oz. tube from Fisheries Supply:

The shipping to my CA zip code from Seattle was $11.45, so the per-tube cost for 5 3 oz. tubes was $15.84, still cheaper than Amazon.

Your Home Depot or another local source may still carry the 3 oz. tube in the store (at whatever price), and there are other sources of the product online, but the prices vary *greatly*.

I saw this new product (at least new to me) at HD. Loctite PL "Marine" "fast cure" adhesive sealant. It is rated for below the waterline. I am guessing it is an analog to 5200. I personally would try it if I had a project right now. What do you think Larry? Tom, Whidbey Island, WA warm and sunny after a Fall and Winter of nearly continuous rain

Generally speaking, boat stores such as West Marine, stock 5200 as it is nearly a necessary item for boaters at one time or another.

Marine supply stores do carry 5200, probably as a regular item of stock; it's just that their prices are usually higher than other sources, and the goop is pricey to begin with! ;-)

When I was looking for the 3 oz. tubes of 5200 Fast Cure for the latest round of sealing, I found online prices ranging from a low of $13.55 to twice that for the same product; with the exception of Fisheries Supply, the higher prices were consistently from marine supply houses. For me, the lower price and convenience of not having to continue to try to search out the product locally was well worth a two-day wait (very fast shipping, I thought!) to start the re-sealing.

Hi Joan,

I was just on Amazon and searched for 3M 5200 and they show it for $10.19 in a 3oz tube as a "Prime" item. I don't recall what the fast cure was bit $10.19 with free shipping would work for me. YMMV!

Defender Marine does seem to have some good prices; another source to keep in mind! But, the $8.99 is for the 1 oz. tube; the 3 oz. tube is $13.99. Still a very good price for this goop, though! ;-)

They're a good outfit. I've bought loads of electrical parts (e.g., FTZ Crimp'n'Seal ring terminals and heavy-gauge FTZ power lugs) from them over the past couple of years.

Hi Tom

I have used a couple tubes of the Loctite Marine adhesive and wasn't impressed, it isn't that cheap and lacked the stickiness of the 3M 5200. When glueing highly stressed items, such as the end caps, I want the strongest adhesive available.
The Loctite Marine has half the tensile strength and stretchability of the 5200.

Considering how much time and effort goes into glueing end caps and sealing roofs, it's silly to try to save a few bucks by using a possibly inferior product, especially when a well proven one is available.
The Loctite Marine is fine for lightly stressed parts but so are the many other construction adhesives, available the local home center for less money. It's what I use for most things, saving the 5200 for special projects where it's long-term, weather-proof strength is needed.

We have a small spot (1/2") in the bathroom window track where the "felt-like" material has come loose. This area is in the rear vertical track. Would this 3M 5200 material be appropriate to seal this area?

I also have a small opening around the rear camera cable entering the coach. Again, would this 3M 5200 material be appropriate for this touch-up.

By "felt like material", do you mean the fuzzy, 3/8" vertical strips glued to the window frame channel that line both sides of the window track? If so, I'd just clean the back of the strip and the metal that it sticks to, let it dry completely, and use a very small amount of Gorilla glue on each surface, and press the strip back into place.

It sounds like the "opening" around the camera cable might be a good candidate for a seal with 5200, but without seeing how big the gap is, it's hard to say. Could you post a photo?

Hello Joan and good to hear from you. You're correct in that I'm talking about the fuzzy 3/8" vertical strip. And once again, I'm very grateful for your help, which is helping us to keep our LD looking good! We'll follow your guidance on this small maintenance project.

The gap on the camera cable is very small and I think I'm going to use a small amount of docor 502 LSD when I touch-up 2-3 spots on the roof later next week. Take care.
