Converting house fluorescents to LED’s

Good day to all,

I converted my four fluorescents fixtures to LED's several months ago, using Andy's careful guidance not only on the how to do it, but also where to get the LED strips and the color recommendations. All went well, and I'm very happy with them.

BUT, unless I'm reading or doing something else that requires plenty of light (which these will definitely provide), being a bit light sensitive, I find even one way too bright for my liking when just having coffee in the morning or listening to some music in the evening before turning in. To solve this, I found a wireless dimmer, which can be easily installed in the fixture at the connection between the ON\OFF switch and the LED string, that is controlled by a small remote that comes with the dimmer. I like this dimmer because it not only provides ON\OFF control, but also has step control, so it can go, at the touch of a button up or down between 25%, 50%, or 100% output. It also has a ramp feature that allows proportional control down to the minimum output (well below 25%) all the way up to 100%, whatever suits ones needs. It has a couple of other modes (strobe mode is one) that I don't use but it could be useful I guess.

Each dimmer comes with its own remote (range of maybe 20', of no importance in the RV I know), though they all share the same frequency so only one remote can manage several dimmers. I put a dimmer on three of four lights I retrofitted to LED's (not the best idea), and depending on how one holds the remote, two lights may come on, and one stays off, then when switched the two go out and one comes on, so it can be a bit of a mess, but I rarely have them all switched on at the fixture anyway so I manage. Otherwise, so far very reliable with a good battery in the remote!

For anyone that has already converted to LED's, or may be considering doing so, this is just a suggestion if like me, you may prefer at least one more subtle light for easing into and out of the day. The price is right, in fact, I don't understand how they can be as inexpensive as they are. Many ship from Hong Kong, and reviews are mixed on delivery times etc. I've paid more to at least buy them from a US vendor.

Thanks, Bill, for the idea and the link to the remote dimmer for the (former) fluorescent fixtures. I too dislike bright lights and currently have baffles shielding my fixtures. The dimmer will be much better. -- Jon ('06 TK "Albatross")
