Towing Question???
Yahoo Message Number: 158869
Bought an '09 Honda CRV - AWD, bought blue ox baseplate, tow bar and SMI braking system.  Got it all installed but have one small problem...
The safety cable cannot easily be connected to my 2005 MB.  What have other people done to remedy this problem.  I found a step bumper, rated at 5000 online (I believe I can just remove the old factory receiver and bolt it into place), I also considered drilling into the receiver (called Lazy Daze the said it would be fine) so the S hook could snap onto the bottom of the receiver, lastly I considered looping the safety cable.  I eliminated the "looping" of the safety cable, it would weaken the cable and is difficult to do each time I unhook as others have mentioned.

How have you overcome this problem???  Your assistance is greatly appreciated!

Sincerely, John Comunelli-2005 MB

Hello John.  We have a BlueOx system just about as you described.  We connect the safety chains to a locking carbina on each side of the tow bar.  There is a picture of it at https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/lifewithalazydazerv/photos/albums/1884666240/lightbox/1377400553?orderBy=ordinal&sortOrder=asc&photoFilter=ALL#zax/1377400553

Hope that helps.

Thank you and howdy neighbor!  Do you know what size carabina you are using and where did you get them?

Just a note. If the safety cable is rated at say, 5,000#, you might  not want to insert any component in that system with a lesser rating.

Search under "spring snap link" on line or at hardware stores. The ones I use for the safety chains are about 5" long and are pretty heavy duty (and should be). Don't remember where I got them. Here's an example at Home Depot: The Hillman Group 3/4 in. Opening Stainless Steel Safety Spring Snap Link (3-Pack)-852029.0 - The Home Depot

I called that piece a carabiner (mis-spelled it in my original post) and it may not actually a true carabiner.  But the picture I listed shows that it a heavy duty, screw tight fitting installed by the BlueOx installer.  It should be available at any hardware store along with a tensile strength rating of some sort.  Hope this helps.

I think they are called 'quick links'.  I was looking for a couple for spares but wasn't looking very hard.    HD ones appear rated 5000 lbs.  My Roadmaster falcon all terrain is rated at 6K, bumper at 4K so I think they should work.

The clip shown has a 450lbs rating, way too small for a safety cable.
A rating of 4-5000lbs is more appropriate.
