Ford F-450 Class C

I saw this  RV at a campground earlier this week. The CA owner built it himself using a 1998 Ford F-450 4wd, diesel pickup. Years ago, he had looked at the LD built on the Chevy  chassis but didn't think that was enough power for an RV. When LD started using the 460 Ford he looked again but, by that time, it was out of his price range so he decided to build one himself. He looked closely at LD and Airstream believing they represented the best quality and ideas in RV's then picked  what he thought were the best ideas from both. According to this fellow, the F series chassis is two feet longer than the E series. His rig measures 25' bumper to bumper.
His exterior siding is the LD aluminum but in 4 x 8 sheets installed vertically and secured with rivets like an Airstream.  The roof is1/2" marine plywood topped with a solid sheet of aluminum. All interior drawers    are built using ball bearing slide-out rollers so the drawers extend fully. There is a built in pantry. The interior living area had two swivel chairs and a small opposing couch. His dining table was unique. When not needed, it lifted up and slid downward into a  storage "pocket". Then a small end table flipped up for casual use.  The primary sleeping area was in the cab-over bunk. Standard kitchen and bath fixtures.
The generator is propane supplied by a 30 gallon tank.
The exterior paint is very eye catching. He took it to a custom paint shop and told  them he wanted something patriotic. The base paint is white with an American flag in red and blue over the white.

Born Free is using the Ford F series on some of their larger models. Perhaps this is the future for Class C's as Ford phases out the E series.

There is a photo in the photo section entitled F-450.

I saw one of those BF on a new F450. Seems like a solution if the folks at LD want to continue. The re-engineering should be occurring now I would think. I would love the 6.8 Powerstroke and the cab room. But the (huge) turning radius would be a PITA. And since some of the engine work down the road on an F series is done by lifting the cab off, that could pose problematic. Interesting food for thought.

The newer F-450/550 models have a very short turning radius even with 4WD.  I have made some really short turns to get out of gas stations while towing a car.  I looked for the actual curb-to-curb distance but did not find the right chart.  Also, some of the earlier diesels did require lifting the cab but it is my understanding that this is no longer necessary.  I'll admit it is a bit scary to look under the hood.  There is a lot of stuff there and not much spare room.
