House Air Conditioner

Hi LDers; It is hot here in central FL and my air conditioner is not cooling.
Perfect timing!  This refers to the house air conditioner not the engine.
The unit comes on and blows but not cool air.  According to a local RV service repairman they do not repair air conditioners in this area.  I would have to purchase a new one.  Is that accurate?  Can the coolant be replaced in the house air conditioner or do I have to buy a new one? We rarely used the air conditioner although I exercised it monthly with the genset.  Have never been to FL before usually spending winters in much cooler AZ and summers in Nova Scotia.
At 8 years of age and with 77,000 miles problems are to be expected...
Happy New Year, Mike

Hello Mike.  I found the following information on-line which might help.

"Duo-Therm typically does not provide refrigerant service ports, they be added, but the general feeling is to replace entire unit.   If the compressor remains cool and fan runs it's likely a start capacitor.  A failed capacitor can often be visually identified by a convex top - they are normally concave."

So you might have to go up top and remove the cover and see if the above applies to your issue.   Hope this helps a bit.

Mike,  I had a no  cooling event last summer in my 2003 MB 26.5 LD.  The problem was the 2  side by side filters at the bottom of the unit.  Rinsed them out, and  worked fine after cleaning.       Escondido,  CA    John

Mike,

Depending on the severity of the problem, it may be that it can't be repaired, but there are several minor problems that can be.  Yes, the coolant can be replaced in the unit if in fact it has leaked out.  If it turns out that has happened, locating the leak and repairing it, then charging the unit would be the way to do this. This needs to be done by a competent (and willing) refrigeration\HVAC tech to make sure it's done right.

A simple way to help narrow down the problem would be to determine first whether the compressor is running. If it is running, but no cooling, this would suggest a refrigeration system problem. This could be anything from low\out of refrigerant to a more serious problem. If it is not running, this would suggest an electrical problem of some sort. This could range from low incoming power, a burnt wire somewhere to a bad compressor. For more detail on an electrical problem, check post 155286.

I hope this helps.  Good luck!

I had a similar issue on a trip to Florida last year.  The problem cleared itself when I turned all the breakers off and then turned them on again.  Made sure the AC and thermostat were off.  Made sure all other appliances were off.  When I turned on breakers then turned on the AC from the thermostat it worked as normal. Also I have noticed that it takes my thermostat a few minutes to tell the compressor there is a demand for cold air.  It is not as immediate as the one at home.

What I think happened.  The cooling thermostat is one that can be set up for zones in a home.  I think the thermostat was looking at the wrong zone.  What I think may of happened is by killing all power the thermostat more less went back to the default programing or setting.

I know next to nothing about electronics but the problem cleared it self that time and three more times that trip after completing the described process.  After that the problem has not occurred again.

Hi.  We had a thermostat go bad while in Orlando.  It was under warranty, so I called the manufacturer and they send us to the Camping World in Kissimmee.  Made a reservation and when we took the LD in, they checked the whole AC unit and did replace the stat under warranty.  This has been our only contact with Camping World service, and they fixed the problem easy-peasy.  Good luck with your repair.
