Our LD Weighing Plan & Feedback

Next week, we plan to get our LD 27' MB weighed with what we consider our traveling load of supplies, fuel, propane, and so forth.  Since we are relatively light travelers, I'm certain that we're well below the Gross Axle Weight Ratings for the front axle (5000 lbs) and for the rear axle (9500 lbs).  We have examined and re-arranged supplies and equipment in the basement so as to make the weight more or less equal on the left and right sides.  We placed our heavier equipment in the basement units above the floor and lighter items in the lower storage areas.  (I'd be slightly embarrassed to say how many times I have actually messed with re-arranging and organizing the basement in the last few months.)  Btw, this will only be a front and rear axle weighing.  I'll do a 4-corner once I find a place to do it.

I'd certainly be interested to read the results of others who have had their 26.5' or 27' weighed.  If anyone is interested, I'll post our results sometime next week. (I'm on a diet until after the weigh-in.)

As I have mentioned in previous posts, I had our 2015 27' RB weighed by RV Weigh in Henderson, NV while on our maiden voyage to Bryce Canyon.
Paul Cunningham was kind enough to meet with us to complete the weigh in. The procedure was pretty straight forward.
With two separate scales, we pulled first the front then the rear of the coach onto the scale sets. Once completed, he presented us with a printout of the results.
Had there been a need, he would have made suggestions as to how the load would be better balanced.
As we were not overloaded, it gave me room to purchase other gear and store it accordingly. Overall, I am glad we had it done.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your Holidays and your LD. I know we are.

If you are in or near the state of Oregon, or just passing through, the 87 permanent weigh scales are open to the public 24/7 whether manned or not. I liked to use the one in Eugene which was rarely manned. I could take my time and weigh each wheel, pairs of wheels, each side, etc. A very nice benefit for the public.

The Escapees park in Livingston can do 4-corner weighings. I don't "think" you have to be an Escapee to avail yourself of this service (it's around $50).

We took the LD to a CAT Scale this morning and weighed the old girl.  The configuration of the scale only allowed us to weigh the steering axle and the drive axle.  The weight included a full gas tank, full propane tank, 1/3 full of fresh water, 1/3 full black tank, 1/3 full grey water, two (2) adults, normal travel supplies to include food and clothing.  The weight also include all our towing equipment and the usual RV bits and pieces.  The front axle weighed 4,085 lbs. and rear axle weighed 8,660 lbs. for a total of 12,745 lbs.  So we are within the GAWR ratings of 5,000 lbs. and 9,500 lbs for a GVWR of 14,500 lbs.  We hope to get a 4 corner weight sooner or later.

At any rate, using the tire pressure chart contained in the owner's manual, which is the same as on the Michelin website, it appears we should have at least 55 psi in each of the front tires and 70 psi in each of the rear tires. Now, please advise me if I've made a mistake or some other kind of rookie error in calculating tire pressures.

I certainly am anxious to hear your guidance on what I consider a very important matter.

Until you get a four corner weighing, I'd recommend adjusting your tire weights up by 5% to allow for any side to side weight imbalance.  From a quick look, this puts you at 60psi front and 75psi rear.  A lot of us add an extra 5psi to each tire as a safety margin.

Hello Art and thanks for your help in establishing a conservative, safety margin for our tire pressure. Your suggestion makes sense given that one side or other could easy need a higher PSI tire.  So, the front tires at 60 PSI and the rear tires at 75 PSI.  Take care.

For what it's worth, I just read the following at http://www.irv2.com/.

National Indoor RV Centers has just invested nearly $20,000 on new state of the art scales at both their Lewisville, TX and Atlanta, GA locations to give accurate four corner weight results. They are doing this as a free service to any motorhome owner. If you are not an NIRVC customer or don't have a Newmar motorhome it doesn't matter. They are doing this as a free service to any motorhome owner. You can stop in for a free weighing or might want to call ahead to reserve a spot..

I'm calling them tomorrow to schedule a visit.
