Toyo Tire Update

Hi folks...

I posted back in September about a MAJOR tire failure with my Toyo tires on the way to the Ladeze outing in Moab, Utah.  Well, today, I got a (non) answer.

After locating my tires, and getting them to the proper place for inspection, Toyo has decided that 4 of the 6 tires had major tread separation.  (That was obvious!) .

They will not speculate as to the cause of the tread separation, and since it all occurred at the same time, and I'd been diligently taking care of the tires, weighing the rig (Escapees Smart Weigh), checking the tires, checking the tire pressures, keeping them covered), I'm really surprised at that.

One comment made by the Toyo rep was "oh, an informed consumer", to which I give thanks to Joan, and all the others on this board.  I also let them know I would be posting the results to this board.

So, as there is no major recall or other "known" issue with these tires per Toyo, anyone else with the Toyo TL225/75R-16/10 115/112Q Open Country A/T tires is just recommended to keep up on your due diligence and have them inspected regularly.

We had tread separation with two Toyos that were purchased in Oct 2011. One was caught Aug 2014 before it blew when having them balanced last fall (while on axle). We replaced two of the six then. The tire dealer saw no reason to replace other 4. Well, another one blew on the interstate that Decembwr. We replaced the other four.

We heard rumors that Toyo was having issues with their tires.

We found Toyo tires to be unreliable on our diesel pusher and switched to Michelins in about 2007. At that time, it was widely recommended to get rid of them and I believe Toyo even stopped making them for the larger rigs, at least for a while. Do not think anything has changed since then. Would not buy again.  s/Terry Apple
