I think your style of camping has a lot to do with how useful solar is. I frequently camp in the deserts of NV and CA and for me it's worth every penny.

But if you prefer to stay in places with electrical hookups solar is an expensive option you might not use. Since I don't like running my loud generator to charge the batteries it gives me a quiet option. I have 470 watts of panels (the roof is covered)  and a good solar charge controller. On most days when I boondock my batteries are charged back up by noon. On one occasion I was able to help charge batteries on an older LD with no generator or solar by running jumper cables from the output to the other LD's batteries. I got some great homemade chicken soup in return. Oh and some good wine too.

When I'm camping the only loud sounds I like are from a certain Jeep with a Banks exhaust.
