This may be a stupid question but... refilling the hot water heater
Yahoo Message Number: 156288
Thanks for the replies I got about emptying and bleaching the tanks for winter storage.  I emptied both the fresh water and the hot water heater and I plan to bleach the whole system before our next trip.
Here's my question, and I apologize if it's really stupid but plumbing and electrical systems are something I just don't understand:
How do I refill the hot water heater when I'm ready to take the rig out again?  Do I just fill the fresh water as usual and the pump will push water into it?  Or do I have to refill it through the same opening by which I drained it?

Thanks,

Fill the water tank. Turn on the pump, open a hot water faucet to let the trapped air out and that's it.
Of course, be sure the drain plug in the tank had been put back in, but you probably knew that. :-)

Syndi, considering you have a late model LD, I would assume you have an operating manual. There are specific instructions on how to winterize and dewinterize, using either a compressor or anti-freeze. This includes filling your hot water heater.

Actually, it didn't talk about refilling.  I looked at the manual before I posted the thread.  I assumed it just refilled when I filled the fresh water and ran the pump, but assuming things has gotten me in trouble before.  I'd rather ask a stupid question that have to pay a bunch of money when I didn't ask and then broke something (speaking from experience).

And, yeah, I figured I'd have to put the plug back in.

Much wiser to ask than to bash on when one is not sure about a procedure. ;-)

As ever, YMMV.

One thing I should have been clear on.
When I fill my tank for the first time, I fill the tank, make sure all faucets are closed then run the pump until it stops. That tells you that the water tank is pressurized. The first time you do that the pump seems to run forever. It does take a while.  I then open a hot water faucet. Air will hiss out until the HWH is filled and air purged from the lines. I then do the same with the cold water side to get the air out of those lines. Then you're ready to go. Hopefully. If after doing this the pump cycles on and off, you may have a leak somewhere. Hopefully not.

There is also a relief valve on the hot water heater and after filling the entire system with water and turning on the hot water heater, you can let any air out of the heater via the relief valve.

With the bypass kit system, you simply replace the plug (which is left out all winter) on the water heater, switch the bypass valve to the "normal" position, and you're good to go. (The intake tube doesn't need to be accessed in the Spring, that is a one step when winterizing. After switching to the intake position and sucking all the antifreeze into the system, I put the switch back to the normal position, set the intake tube off to the side and re-cap it, and that is done for another year).
