I am considering Good Sam club's Roadside Assistance program.  Does anybody have any experience with actually needing it? Does anybody recommend a different service?  We are just starting the retirement RV experience in a new (to us) 2005 26.5 RB.

Thanks

We just used it recently for the first time. Used it on our SUV. Very quick smooth process on the phone, and tow truck arrived within a half hour. No paperwork to sign. Very pleased with their service.

I have had the AAA service.  The have been great. Used them twice this year . Ran out of gas  and they helped me out.  last week I lost my car keys.  They opened my car and made me a key on the spot.  Took them 15 minutes to do both after a 90 minute wait for the lock smith.  Cost was about $250 but AAA paid $65 of it.  I do have an RV service with them but have not used it yet.  I did try to use it once to have my trailer towed  to the dealer for repair.  They would not do it they said  the Trailer had to be disabled or unsafe for me to tow .  I hop this helps

Unless AAA has changed their towing plan over the years, they still may have a limited towing distance with RV towing. Good Sam does not. They tow to the closest R V repair place which can handle the problem. Prior to our Lazy Daze purchase in 2000 we traveled with an older Apollo motor home throughout the USA, Alaska and into Mexico. In several occasions we had to call on Good Sam assistance for towing. Even with our Lazy Daze we have needed them for a tow of 140 plus miles from somewhere in the boonies to Cody, Wyoming. They never let us down. Just a plug for them.

Have you looked at Coachnet? Many members of this board have reported positive experience's with them. I have the coverage but have never needed to use it.

Good Sam's ERS is good, but also look at the service provided by CoachNet.

I would NOT recommend AAA's ERS for an RV.  Not all AAA areas have RV emergency roadside service, so if you have a breakdown in one of those non-covered areas, you'll be on your own to find...and pay for...a tow, a tire change, whatever.  And then you'll have to seek reimbursement from AAA.

I have had the AAA service.

--- This "which emergency road service?" topic comes up periodically; the essential points are these:

--- AAA is organized into regions/districts; each is essentially autonomous, and all districts do *not* offer "RV Plus" coverage. If your local AAA district does offer an emergency road service policy for your *RV* AAA, be sure that it will cover what you expect it to whenever and wherever you happen to need it.

--- The most popular emergency road service providers *for RVs* are Coach Net and Good Sam; each has a website which offers specifics as to coverages, limitations, and costs.

Hi Randy,

We've used Good Sam road service for over 30 years, with three different motor homes. The first two motor homes were "some other brand - or SOB". They were older and in greater state of disrepair, so we had occasion to use Good Sam often and in many different parts of the country. They were terrific every time. It's very comforting to know your problem will be handled, if on Hghwy 80 going thru Nevada, or in the middle of West Texas broken down with the sand, sidewinders, and roadrunners.

They always came through, and we were taken to a repair shop that handled the repairs completely. Sometimes, it took time to get to where the repair shop was, or it took a long time for the repair, but they always came through. And it was very important to us, because we were travelling with young kids in the early years.

I highly recommend them.

PS - We have yet to need service with our Lazy Daze - have had it since 2010, so the quality of their service may have changed in the past 5 years or so.

I have had Good Sam (or Camping World) roadside service since 2005.  I used it twice in 2013, both times for flat tire (inside dual, left and right), in the Blue Ridge mountains area of VA.  They arrived promptly, dragged the spare tire out of the compartment on my 2005 MB, and installed it.  Even put the dead tire on the floor inside the coach.  (It had extended tire stems and would not go into the compartment.)  They were courteous and efficient.  I have no complaints.  I think that with Good Sam, and Coachnet, you are relatively sure that the service person has RV or heavy vehicle experience.

I have AAA , Auto Club and have been with them for 36 years. They are great. As far as how many miles they tow, I have RV plus and it's 200 miles. I'm guess'n if anyone has a problem and needs repair, any Roadside Assistant company will tow you to the "nearest" repair shop. Now if your more then 200 miles away from home and want it towed home Im wondering if any RSA company would do that say 1000 miles away.. Just wondering..

"I have AAA , Auto Club and have been with them for 36 years. They are great."

Except when you happen to break down in one of the regions where AAA doesn't offer RV towing. Then, as others have pointed out, you're out of luck. Coach-Net and Good Sam provide RV towing service everywhere in the US--no regional "blank spaces" on the map.

"if your more then 200 miles away from home and want it towed home Im wondering if any RSA company would do that say 1000 miles away."

I don't know of any roadside assistance service that promises to tow you back to your fixed-location home. They'll tow you to the nearest service facility that can handle your problem (and at least in the case of Coach-Net, will find that facility for you). That's the service they sell--not towing your rig from Yosemite back to your home in Hoboken.

There is one service I know of that will return your vehicle to your stick house. In a medical emergency, if you have SkyMed coverage, they will "arrange and pay for your transport to your home hospital in the U.S. or Canada should you suffer a critical illness or injury. Plus we'll even return your spouse or companion, your children, your grandchildren, your stranded vehicles and your pets!"

But SkyMed is not roadside assistance for vehicle breakdowns. And it costs three to five hundred dollars a year.

My experience with AAA is their service has significantly degraded in the past few years. Employee layoffs and office closures have taken there toll. Why mess with it, for the RV'er Coachnet is superior in every way. My decision to drop AAA was not made based on RV experience. I was traveling to South America and needed an international drivers license. Stopped in to the local office (which is now closed) and requested an International drivers license with a motorcycle endorsement. The girl at the window said "oh it's lunchtime now, come back in an hour and smiled as she closed the window. I did come back and the license was not ready. I returned the next day and the license didn't have the proper motorcycle endorsement I asked for. I cancelled my membership.
When I got to Ecuador I rented a motorcycle and took the drivers test at their version of a DMV. Better service and I got the license in 5 minutes. That's service! I was so happy I brought flowers to the Senorita that helped me the next day. It was a great vacation. But there are no RV's in Ecuador.

I hear you Andy and also I didn't read all the above statements before I wrote mine about AAA. Good Sams/Coach Net sounds good also from what I read above.

"I have AAA , Auto Club and have been with them for 36 years. They are great."

"Except when you happen to break down in one of the regions where AAA doesn't offer RV towing. Then, as others have pointed out, you're out of luck".

Andy,  I was in an area where AAA did not offer RV towing but what they did was use another towing company in the area. This was in 2012. Maybe things have changed since then as Bob stated..
