Pla Cool swamp cooler

After cleaning out the swamp cooler in our newly purchased 1989 LD 22', we are very happy with the output (and good battery manners!).

However, the cover of the cooler is on its last legs with some pronounced plastic rot. The hinges are breaking away. I am hoping I can buy some more time with some epoxy and metal straps as reinforcement, but this thing is going to blow off at some point in the future.

Has anyone had good luck with fashioning a replacement cover? It would certainly seem possible to buy a larger cover of some sort and then working to appropriately space the cover for the fan/spinner.

I think you can still order the parts new.  I have a web link at home and will post it up when I get home.

I'm sure somebody here has it and will put it up before too long.

I was thinking TurboKOOL instead of PlaCool, but maybe the link will help.

Also, go to message thread 136571 regarding PlaCool.

I think the earlier RecAire (sp?) is the same as TurboKool, still in business a few miles from where I live:

Stay Cool with TurboKOOL - Advanced RV Evaporative Coolers

One could fairly easily use a beat up old cover as a male mold to layup a glass and epoxy cover.

I installed a new TurboKool a few years ago. (eah, I know, everyone else is removing them and here I am going the other direction - I've felt like a salmon going the wrong way most of my life :c). After installation, job 1 is to spray that thing down with plastic compatible rattle can paint to extend it's mean time before UV induced failure. Same with the other plastic covers you don't need to peer through.

BTW we love our swamp cooler. Boondocking, it's nice to stay reasonably cool without that dang "quiet" generator grinding away . . . and all powered by solar!

Thanks. I did see that post, but I think my cover is in worse shape. The system works, the cover is challenged.

I was specifically hoping that somebody had converted a roof vent cover or the like to fashion a replacement for the Pla Cool cover- and could point me in the direction of parts that could be adapted.  It seems if you could get a larger cover to fit, you would just need to add something to correctly space the cover for the spinning element to get the system to work as intended. I would much rather figure something out along those lines than pay $500 because a piece of plastic is going bad.
