Yikes! What happened to this poor LD???
Yahoo Message Number: 152563
I'm guessing a pretty substantial tree fell on it (lots of sawdust and foliage on top of the carport). Does anyone know the story behind this? Unfortunately there's no image credit in the article, so nowhere to send condolences even.
Does anyone else imagine that an SOB would be about 2 inches high after something like this?

If he is the original owner you could find out who member No. 2569 is. He probably doesn't want to talk about it. :-)

The LD has a Caravan Club number; maybe someone with a list of CC members can identify the owner (if the current owner is the one to whom the number was issued).

I don't know what kind of tree fell on this fellow's shelter/rig, but my neighbor has two large redwood trees at his property line; these were planted by the original property owner in the early 70s when the subdivision was built. The "planter" didn't go to tree school and apparently was of the opinion that redwoods "are so cute when they're little"! Redwoods are magnificent trees, but they are *not* "street trees" and don't belong in residential neighborhoods (or in median strips, in corner plantings along a fence, in a small yard, and in plenty of other unsuitable locations!).

Over the years, these two redwoods have behaved as nature designed them, shedding needles everywhere and dropping branches in heavy rain and/or wind. The neighbor "topped" the trees several years ago, not knowing that a redwood's response to topping is to send up two or three "spikes" from the cut. The spikes grow quickly, and are weak and prone to decay, particularly when stressed by drought, and in high winds, they can and do shear off. So far, these crashing spikes have not smashed the *motorhome* (small branches have landed on it occasionally in storms, but, so far, no damage), but neither the patio cover nor a corner of my house is original! When high winds are predicted (we don't have rain any more), I move the rig to an "open" location; it's safer on the street.

As ever, YMMV.

That is really sad. I don't think the Mothership would even attempt to fix it. Look for an ad to part it out. I would be interested in buying the V-10 motor if anyone finds the identity of the owner.

The number 2569 on the left rear might be a clue?

2569 is not listed in our 2014 roster.  Maybe they are in an older roster.

It appears 2569 was issued in 1997 to Walter & Hermina Berkan.  They may not be the current owners.

I do. Why would anyone imagine LD is the only company that builds a strong structure? Even limiting the comparison to Class C, how about Born Free, or even my Jayco, with it's metal structure and laminated walls? All the companies have to make tradeoffs between weight, strength, and cost, and I don't think any of them use "large falling tree" as a design criteria!

Aha. I found the original in a "stock photo" image bank via Google reverse image search.
The picture was taken May 1, 2010 by a photographer based in Springfield, Oregon, but there's no GPS info in the EXIF data for the photo for the actual location, although it looks like an Oregon license plate if I zoom in. I'll spare y'all the details of the camera make and model, flash settings, exposure and aperture ;-)

Pretty slick. I wouldn't have thought to do that. Always something new to learn about the Internet - and this reinforces the fact that everything that's posted on the 'net is available for viewing by the rest of the universe.

Also, with the original owner names provided by Art via the Caravan Club roster, I was easily able to confirm the following:
They or someone in the family still owned it when the tree fell and squashed it in 2010.

The photographer is their grandson.
There's another photo in his portfolio showing a side view before the tree was removed.
A little more research would determine the exact model year, street address, and identity of the man in the photo. I'll leave that sleuthing to the real experts ;-)
Something worth thinking about for the bloggers, photographers, mailing list denizens and Facebookers: We reveal way more than we may realize when sharing photos online. One clue leads to another, and Google makes it very easy to connect the dots. If this worries any of you, it's probably too late.
