"Tioga Rd. (Hwy. 120) through Yosemite NP is scheduled to open Monday, May 4."

An early opening is a sign of how bad the drought is.
Many years it doesn't open until July.
If you are going to visit the Sierras this summer, do it sooner rather than later. Some of the lakes on the east side dried up last summer.

I wonder if those fewer days open in the early years were because the road cleaning equipment wasn't as good as today's? I imagine the road was pretty bad back then too. I think the first time we drove over Tioga in a car was back in the 50's. Pretty scary even then. One of my uncles was the first person to pull a trailer over Tioga from the 395 side.   Great chart!

We drove on rt 395 from Reno to the Mothership and back up last week.  There is NO snow except for very high up.  Both Monitor and Sonora Passes are open.  We were kind of surprised that Tioga was still closed, but it's a steep, long drive, so I expect that they're just being as safe as possible.

Thanks for the memories.
We were in Yosemite for Spring break 1977 in our VW camper.  Left out over Tioga Pass, US 395,  SR 89 Monitor Pass, & SR 4 Ebbetts Pass back to Sacramento.  (Wouldn't take the LD 30 IB that way).

Down US 395 in March this year.   Looks about as dry as '77.

All those passes in a VW bus? That must have been a very slow trip.

I had an old one years ago. It had a sticker on the back that said "Don't ever get stuck behind a VW Bus" That made me laugh so hard I bought it. Unfortunately it had an untimely ending in the AZ. desert. I don't think there is a car built that is easier to pull the motor on. Probably the original camper van. The pop-top has been copied by many.

Joel, I've driven Monitor and Ebbetts Passes several times; it's true that my rig is only 24', but both roads, particularly Monitor, can be traveled in longer rigs. Monitor has some steep sections, but the road has lines! ;-) Ebbetts is narrow and has quite a few hairpin curves, but both roads are pretty rides. 108 (Sonora) is do-able, but it can be even tighter than Ebbetts, particularly when meeting another vehicle on a curve. (And, it's a long "downhill" from Dardanelles to above Sonora Bridge before 395.)

Road choices are definitely a YMMV thing! ;-)

I have driven both of those passes in my 23.5 towing a Jeep Cherokee so I think it would be doable in a 31'.
But make sure your brakes are up to snuff before doing so. I always stop a couple times on the way down to let them cool. Beautiful views.

If you happen to be in the area of Milford, CA. on 395 there is a nice RV park called Honey Lake a few miles north of the town. P.A. is accepted giving you a 50% discount. Very nice folks. They always let you pick your own spot.

One July 4th heading West towards Ebbetts we were pulled over by the CHP.  It was to let a parade go by:  2 CHPs, 2 Big Rig Tow Trucks and one loooong low-boy trailer carrying a 50' motor yacht that got stuck on one of the hairpins that dropped a few hundred feet to the canyon!   Where they were taking the boat I have no clue.

We'd have to unhich the CRV for that run. Besides, from just East of Sacramento, it's pretty much our back yard.  Good drive for fall colors.
