Letter from Lazy Daze YEAH!!!!!
Yahoo Message Number: 151688
Yesterday I received a letter from Lazy Daze. Well you can imagine my excitement and couldn't wait to open it to read that my new LD was ready for pick up. What a let down, it was informing me they had received my 2015 chassis and gave me the vin. They told me when we ordered in Sept that an Aug 2015 completion would be about right. The wait goes on. Reading these two comments on the wait for a new LD reminded me of our experience, which was considerably different.

Bernie and I ordered our Mid Bath early in April 2009, when the economy was already in free fall and threatened to plunge even further over the cliff. We wondered if we were crazy to do that and actually worried that LD might not survive long enough to deliver our MB. We joked that we were "helping keep the company alive."  And who knows? Maybe we did.

Our delivery took place the last week of June 2009, less than 3 months after placing the order.  Timing is everything, I guess.

And BTW, John and Ian, you will get a phone call, not a letter, when it's time to schedule pick-up of your beautiful new rig.

PS... it will be worth the wait.  :-)

"Timing is everything, I guess."

--- I believe that the (currently) long wait times may be due *primarily* to the fact that LD is a small manufacturer and receives a correspondingly "small" allocation of chassis (both 158" and 176" wheelbases) and engine/chassis combinations, i.e., the 158" with the optional V-10, from Ford.

And do they call in the middle of the night, like the Nobel Prize committee, so you think it must be a dream or a prank call?

I was there early March to give them my order and check. He gave me the order form and said they would contact me in a few months to order for 2016. I can send the deposit then.

Can't even give my money away.

Hard to say how all of this will work out.
Ford scaled back production of E450 during the recession and may not be able to increase to increase its output. Every major component of the E450 is obsolete, having been replaced in the other truck models years ago for newer parts, so there isn't an alternate source of parts.
Lazy Daze is a dinky company compared to the big RV builders, like Fleetwood, and receive a low priority when it comes to receiving allotments. I hear of waits of 15 months now. That's just too long a wait for most.
The new Ford Transit cutaway does not have enough GVW or power to be useful for anything but a very small RV, certainly not up to today's standards. It's just another Sprinter-type chassis with a space age-looking cab. Yawn.

Ford has stated repeatedly that they do not want to build country specific models. The wide E450s will not fit on the majority of the world's roads and it's use limited to primarily the US and Canada.
So, does that mean they will abandoned the Class C market?  Stay tuned.

With the growing RV market, someone is going to build a suitable replacement chassis, question is how long will we have to wait? There is no lack of suitable powertrains, available from many companies.
I would like to see it happen before I'm too old to want another RV.

The Ford Transit cutaway chassis (apparently, all wheel bases/ dual rear wheels),  the Transit van, and the Transit wagon (van and wagon models with dual rear wheels) all have a maximum gvwr of 10360 pounds, even less than the MB Sprinter at 11030. The gvwr of the Dodge ProStar is even more puny: 9400 pounds.

Ford could significantly improve things by transplanting one their 2015 pickup powertrains into the existing E450 chassis. More power and MPG.

My wife and I were extremely lucky. We visited the factory in Feb. and we're told the 2015's were all sold out. I called them about a month ago and was told there was one more chassis available, as someone bailed on ordering. We snapped it up, sent our downpayment. Todd said it would be November or December before it will be completed. I guess timing is everything. We upgraded to a 27' mid bath. Now all we need to do is sell our 2004, 24.5' FD. We need to keep it until end of September but will put it up for sale then. We'd make a pretty good deal for someone willing to "trade rigs" at the factory when ours is finished.

Wow Rick!  Great for you.....but kind of sucks for the rest of us who have been 'waiting in line' so to speak.  :-p

No one at the factory said anything about a waiting list. I'd hate for anyone to think I "cut in line".

When I was there March 3, Todd mentioned they had a 2015 Cancellation and a 2015 Chassis was available if I wanted.  I passed on it since I want to wait until 2016-17 before I start RV'ing on a semi-retirement basis.

You did not cut in line, you were just fortunate enough to get the extra spot for 2015.

Good for you.

My wife and I are looking for are first lazy daze.  We will maybe retire at the end of this year and are looking for a used 24' with rear bath and front lounge (with two chairs and fold down table), and overhead cab bed.  Is this your design?  Thanks,  Rick

Rick, You may already be aware but there is a good checklist in the files section to help you when checking out a used Lazy Daze. It will help you to make an educated, logical purchasing decision removing some of the emotion from the "I Want It" syndrome.

I am interested in your 24' ld.  I am looking for a used lazy daze with floor plan of rear bath, front lounge with two chairs and fold down table, and over head bunk.  I could do the "trade" at the factory if it is what we need.  Pictures would be nice if you have them.  Thanks  Rick   email at rtrailsdchutes@...
