Rear camera option

I see that LD Company offers a rear view camera system as an option.  These days, however, do it yourself kits offer a nice system complete with audio (great when someone stands at the rear and helps you get backed in).  Surely as time passes this technology will get even better especially for night viewing and using the system for security while parked.

Would you opt for the LD factory installed rear camera system or go with something you install yourself? A nice right side view would be good too.  That camera could double as the security camera and tie into your cellphone, iPad or tv's in the rig.  I guess the best thing about the factory installed one is:

1)  It's wired -- although wireless is available in the do-it-yourself kits
2)  It's got a monitor that is built-into the Ford truck cab and not perched on the dash potentially blocking your view of the road

The bad part about the factory installed system is that the monitoring screen is probably small and the resolution might not be very clear.  Is there audio?

It seems a lot of you are driving LD's that are up to 15 or more years of age.  Surely the factory had backup or rear view cameras back then, but better quality stuff is available today.  Especially something you can get varying views and angles at the rear.  I would like a side camera preferably optional for both sides too.

I was checking out the camera systems on Amazon a while ago and very impressed with the quality and low cost.  But, the bigger monitors are best suited for a motorhome with huge front windshield and dash to perch it on.

Also, is anyone also recording with a dash cam what goes on 170 degrees out your front windshield?  Who knows, some night you may capture proof on video of a flying saucer.  LOL

My factory installed rear camera has a large (about 4" x 6"), clear monitor and has audio.  '08 MB.

We ordered the one from the factory and were pleased at the quality of the picture when we drove a rig at the factory. Yes, it does have one way audio so the "spotter" can talk to the driver, but not the other way around.

An advantage to the factory one is that the wiring is installed and sealed. If you do not like their camera you can always go to another brand and use the existing wiring. I would not go with the wireless, too many chances for malfunction.

If you're buying new, it's worth the money.  The monitor has 2 channels so you could add another input source.  One way audio lets the driver hear the shrieking and the crunch.   I turned ours up just a little- original config showed the trailer hitch but not traffic behind the towd.   Added a 2" receiver hitch brake light connected to the SMI stay-n-play which faces forward until I can wire something into the cab.  Note: the camera does not see the red LED well, look white (I can see it in the rear view mirror anyway).

I'd buy it again, or have one installed.
