Fluorescent light question

I understand that unless a fluorescent bulb is marked "dimmable", one cannot use a dimmer switch with it. I assume LDs with pre-LED lights do not have dimmable bulbs. Will the two-bulb fluorescent lights work OK if you remove one bulb? No damage to the ballast or single bulb left in?

If you're talking about fluorescent bulbs, most fixtures are not happy with only one bulb.

But if you're talking about the LED tubes that replace fluorescent bulbs, you must disable the ballast in order to install the LED tubes, which run directly from 12 V. So it makes no difference whether you use one or two LED tubes in a fixture.

Thanks, Andy.
Yes, I am asking about non-LED fluorescent bulbs. When you say "not happy", are you implying there could be damage to the fixture if used with one bulb or a single bulb just doesn't perform well - or both? There are times when the two fluorescent bulbs are too much light in the living area and I'd like to remove one to tone it down. I don't plan on converting to LEDs anytime soon.

My question is why not chance over now rather than later. It will cost about $25 to do the 4 florescent fixtures in the MH; a little work and cut the power used by them to about one third used now
