how to hook up a portable satellite dish
Yahoo Message Number: 150413
I just bought a 2008 LD IB30.  I took it out this weekend and could not get a signal.  I have a tailgater that I connected to the cable outlet.  I could not get a signal.  The manual says that the cable hookup will not work with portable satellites.  Any suggestions? rkeider

The dome and the receiver have to have a direct connection without a splitter inline (which the cable connection has).
There are a few ways to solve this:
1. Run the cable from the dish through a window and hook it up directly to the receiver.
2. Remove the splitter from the cable connection.
3. Run a new dedicated satellite TV cable.
(This all assumes you are a Dish customer and have a compatible receiver.)

There is a way to use the "cable" coax for both cable and satellite dish connections.  Buy a coax "A-B switch" like those typically used to connect game consoles to the antenna input of a TV set.  Disconnect the cable coax from the normal "antenna amplifier/switch" and connect it to the "output terminal" of the A-B switch.  Connect one "input terminal" of the A-B switch to the satellite receiver input.  Connect the other terminal of the A-B switch to the "cable terminal" of the antenna amplifier/switch.  Almost all A-B switches are pure switches with no internal stuff so they will work in either direction.  You must have a direct DC path from the satellite receiver to the satellite dish as the receiver supplies power to the dish.  I don't know how much access you have to the coax, etc in your IB.  I used the above scheme in my MB but had easy access to things.  As a later step, I removed the external telephone connection from the coach (2005 MB) and installed a separate coax putting the external coax connector into the location previously occupied by the telephone connector.

Thanks.  Would you happen to know which line is the direct line to the satellite after I disconnect from the splitter.

"Would you happen to know which line is the direct line to the satellite after I disconnect from the splitter."

This Eureka article has a simple tip that'll make it easy to determine which is which. Basically, you short one end and test the other for continuity. If you get a beep (or zero ohms), you know you have the cable you want.

Go to the group's website and either unsubscribe from the group (which you can do through email), or set your delivery preferences to website (don't remember the exact wording, but it should be clear once you see the options).

Not so simple. The Membership Options don't seem to work right now. I just get error messages when attempting to modify my subscription message delivery options. I simply set up a Yahoo filter to trash any incoming Quartzsite Group messages for now.

Me too. I have received absolutely nothing in the way of spam or porn. Maybe it has to do with the spam filters at the ISP. I am always surprised when I see comments like that when all I get is messages from the group.

It is the LaxyDazeQuartzsite Digest that must have been hijacked.  I was not subscribed and had to create a spam filter in Gmail's web app to stop them.  You will see the problem is you do a Google search for the group.

A very good reason to form a Yahoo forum as a "members only" site .
Owners should monitor and removed offending messages and not let their sites fall to this nonsense.
This didn't need to happen and can be fixed.

I am on the digest version of the Quartzsite group, but didn't see anything unusual in my mailbox.  Perhaps Earthlink filtered it out before sending along the posts.

"Some of us got absolutely bombarded with junk from this group"

To clarify; it wasn't this group (lifewithalazydazerv)! It was Roger Nickey's Quartzsite-related Yahoo group. Apparently Roger has not yet been able to resolve the problem of spam posts to his group.

Which is why we very seldom see spam here. First, it's a members-only group. Second, anyone who wants to join has to be approved by one of the moderators. Third, when requesting membership they're asked (by Yahoo) to provide a comment about why they want to join. If we see something generic such as "Want to join your great group," or just "Hello"--or no comment at all--we put the request on hold and send an email explaining that in order to screen out spammers, we'd like to hear why they're interested in Lazy Dazes. No reply? No admission.

These simple, common-sense practices have kept spam to a minimum here--I doubt we see more than three or four instances a year, and those are almost always from members whose Windows PCs have been hacked or whose email addresses have been spoofed. On the rare occasions when it does happen, we delete the spam and if appropriate, ban the member responsible (if the spam was deliberate). As Larry said, this problem is easily preventable.

"I agree with Bill. Porn every day."

There are easy solutions to this. 1) Stop the Quartzsite group from sending you emails. To do this, log into Yahoo and go to any page in that group's website. Click on the "Membership" menu (toward the top right of the page, just below the banner photo) and choose "Edit Membership." Change your email preferences for the group to "No Emails." You can still read the group's messages on the website, skipping the ones you don't want to see.

Or 2) quit the group until the moderator fixes the problem.
