Quartzsite. Roger's 1/2 Acre
Yahoo Message Number: 150338
I just finished reading a lot of postings here that are pretty negative about Quartzsite.  This seems to have blown up all of a sudden and I can't seem to find out where it started.  First of all, there is no one with more LazyDaze Quartzsite camping experience than me.  I accidentally started the "Q" group with the help of Jerry Galang 5 years ago.  We have camped at three different sites over the years.  We started with about 10 rigs and last year we had over 30.  Most everyone had a great time and many have come back for each of the five years. We come here for the group camping, friendship and the fun that we have together.  Many of us correspond through the year in anticipation of the next time.  Shopping and quality of merchandise are way down the list.

The theft stories on this board all stem from Andy's one theft of a generator well over 7 years ago.  This was an awful experience and I am sorry for Andy's loss.  In the five years our group has been coming here, and we leave tons of stuff outside.  NOTHING has ever been stolen.  The Rangers come around at least once or twice while we are here.

Bob Moore:  The first year you were here, I heard no complaints.  Last year you were sick and almost never came out of your rig.  We began to worry you had died in there and if you will recall I came over and knocked on your door to see if you were OK.  I don't remember if you ever went to town except for food and medicine. Probably not a fun experience for you.

Larry Wade:  You were only here for a couple of days and myself and one other rig were here.  Hardly enough time or experience to make such a harsh judgement.  You never got to participate in a happy hour or campfire or meet the 30 or 40 dedicated LDrs that show up later.

Again, "Q" is for group camping and great friends.  Quality of the local area is not the reason we come here.  It is not a resort or fancy $40 a night RV park with washer toss tournaments.  It isn't for everybody but it's for us.

I'm with Roger on this.

This is our 2nd year at the Lazy Daze gathering in Quartzsite.  I think Roger said it all.  It's all about the Lazy Daze group of folks and not much about Quartzsite itself.  We wouldn't come here for the Quartzsite vendors or the tent RV show.  You can find all that in many other places.  It is a side show.

There's a group of 8 rigs here now with quite a few more expected in the next several days.  Even with those numbers we won't be crowded.

I can't imagine any of us come here for a quality camping experience.  Its the Lazy Daze group that makes this all worthwhile.  Old friends, new friends, seeing what others have done with their rigs, listening to travel stories, impromptu gatherings, a few potlucks, campfires,...what's not to like?

The "Quartzsite = theft and crime" theme seems to have started in a factual basis with Andy's unfortunate loss some years ago and is now taken on a larger life in anecdotal reports of crime problems here. Last year, I finished up a 37-year career in law enforcement.  I can say without equivocation that nothing about this place gives me reason to believe that I am in jeopardy of being a crime victim.  I take usual and customary precautions and get on with enjoying myself.  If I do happen to become a crime victim here, then I'll deal with it and move on.  Its all just things.

I've seen the high-dollar rigs here.  I've seen the modest rigs with folks who are living their lives a little more on the edge than me.  I don't have any reason or facts to associate those around me who are less fortunate than me as being crime problems.  If it turns out otherwise, I'll deal with it when it happens.

Drop by the Lazy Daze group in Q if you are in the area.  You'll be missing a good time if you pass by.

Dan

PS:  Someone here has figured out how to do laundry without going into town and standing in line at the crowded laundromats.  Kinda fun.

Roger, LD group, I have been going to Quartzsite a lot and this will be my 12th year. I invited Roger one year and he invited a few more LDs and they camped with my group. As they grew in size they decided to get their own space. I can see their group from our place and manage to go visit at least once while I am there.

In all my visits there I (or anyone in my group) have experienced any thefts (knock on wood). I'm not saying it will never happen because it could. My group feels safe camping here, and like Rogers group we are there for the friendship.

Dan, I would be interested in hearing more about doing laundry without going into town.....

Roger I apologize if if insulted you. If you think I was attacking you or your group site. it's just the opposite. I suggest staying with a large group for mutal watchfulness, as well as the comradery.
It's a fact of life that loose environments, like Quartzsite, have more problems than camping in more controlled sites or in secluded locations. Other I know others who have had problems at Q too, it has been an annual event for many years and brings in all sorts of people.  It's a different form of camping than what most of us are familiar with.
Since returning, I have recommended to a couple of LD  friends, who are going to Q this year, to find your encampment. Wish we had not been on a tight schedule, we stayed as long as we could. Obviously, we enjoy meeting other LD owners.
If you are going to Q, Roger's Half Acre is the place to stay

Roger, No offence on the Q. I camped there before I had the LD but at the North end of town and in Parker.
I think your group is full of good people and my comments were not directed at them or you.

If you talk with the Rangers you will get the story on the theft problem. Its not a reflection on Quartzite as a whole. Let others explore the area and form their own opinion.

I did suffer from Medical Issues last year, and luckily Parker had some excellent facilities to help. This has happened elsewhere and I certainly don't blame the Q for it. My understanding is that Flu was rampant in the area and others in the group suffered as well.

Each to there own and enjoy your stay. I pointed out the positive aspects from my perspective in earlier posts. Hope all goes well for you and the group. No offence intended.

Bob

I have never been to Quartzsite.  We plan on going there next year.  Humans the to pick and chose what we are afraid of.  Most all of the time it is irrational.  The very action of driving around Quarzsite is most liking to lead to harm then any human removing some object we leave laying about.
As an interesting side note .....  I have traveled all over this world.  Many times I was told that 'Americans are the most fearful people on earth.'  I would not be happy to lose any of my stuff that I love so dearly but it can be replaced.  The time I spend enjoying the company of others 'like' me I can't.
I think it was Larry that said its like spring break for old folks with out the wet t shirt contest ...... :(

Glen At the moment listening  to the surf in Kihei, Maui and yes we did the road to Hana and back.  For those that don't know it's a  60 plus miles of twists and turns on one way road and bridges built between 1910 and 1940.

We don't rule this out.  Our happy hours can get rowdy.  You will just have to show up to see.

Quartzsite...
We have enjoyed Quartzsite the past two years with Roger and fellow Lazy Dazers.  Lots of activities, good food and fellowship.  We have never had a problem there or any place in our seven years of RVing full time (except ... a kayak was stolen from an Oregon beach as I recall.)

We won't make it this year because my wife decided it was time to settle down for part of the year with a cozy apt in Eugene, overlooking a small golf course.  Life is a compromise.  (Really?) "Happy Wife, Happy Life"  and all that stuff.  Oh heck, just forget it. I am in the whining stage as I drink a whiskey sour wishing I was in front of a campfire with the LD group rather than looking out at the dreary skies and endless rain that accompanies an Oregon winter.

It's really not too shabby here except that I find that I really, really miss RVing full time.  Such an elegant, simple, active, frugal lifestyle...and one of the reasons is because of people like Roger who donate their time to make various destinations a great community experience.

Regarding the generator experience...everyone should know by now that if you have a loose generator that's not triple locked or cemented to your site, various members of the underworld may seek out such treasures usually at nightime.  As a camp host managing seven campgrounds this past summer that was one of our biggest concerns.  Otherwise theft is minimal.  And...just to cheer up fellow RVers about the realities of apt or condo living, within four weeks of our move, our 18 year old recumbent bicycles were stolen during Christmas vacation.  These same bicycles travelled with us about the world crossing Europe, New Zealand and the USA. They had U-Locks, cables, etc.  The thieves were nice enough to leave the U-Locks.
Bike theft is a real problem in Eugene and many university cities, as are generators in campgrounds.

So moral of the story...enjoy the moment, and especially enjoy the time at Quartzsite with Roger and Gang. Theft is a reality here, there, and everywhere.  Don't let it spoil a great time on the road.

George,

You have us confused with the Born Free group in La Posa South...  ;^)
