shocks and yahoo issues...

I ordered some Ford stock shocks from the mothership for our '04 FL and installed them yesterday. I had previously tried to purchase proper tools for removing the top nut on the front shocks, but all that worked was a combination of old and new for the the driver's side, with 18 mm open-end for the upper shock body. The new ones worked for the passenger side, for the most part, trickier for the driver's side:
21 Pc SAE & Metric Go-Thru Socket Set

Once the top nut was most of the way off, I used a ratcheting combination wrench to finish, 15 mm for both. For the rear shocks, the same combination was used on the top nut. The new rear shocks installed with no problem - for both front and rear, I compressed them ahead and secured with picture wire to ease installation.
The new front shocks were a different matter, as the upper nut and shock were both 21 mm. This is not a size in the new tool set, so I had to use conventional open and box wrenches, a time-consuming operation. Note in front, for both removal and installation, I jacked the wheel off the ground, using the trailing strut pivot as the jack point. This gave enough clearance between spring coils to allow reasonable wrench movement turning the top of the shock. Jacking up about halfway was the right spot for starting the top nut. Down completely for tightening the lower shock mount. No jack at all for the rear shocks.
Now the Yahoo issue. I find I can't use links many places, including those in posts and even to log out. Don't know if it is due to some change at my end, but I have no problem at other websites.

Steve, good on ya for replacing the shocks; that driver's side front shock is very difficult to get to, as I'm sure you know! I think that the stock Ford shocks are easier to "compress" for installation than Bilsteins; at least, I hope they were for your sake!

Embedded links (reading the board at the website) open for me; no problems. I'm sure you checked your settings; it's probably just another in a long line of Yahoo "warts" from their ongoing efforts to remove all evidence of useful functionality from the message boards! ;-)

I had the shocks on my LD replaced with Bilstein Comfort series shortly after taking ownership. My LD is at the max GVWR and these got rid of the porpoising and bottoming out when off-roading. IMO they are worth the extra bucks. For those wanting the stock Monroes LD sells new take-offs cheap I am told.

The stock Ford shocks have a similar ride to the Bilstein Comforts, both of which work fine for the 23.5' and 24' models. The Comforts have a softer ride than the standard Bilsteins. The Bilstein Comfort's main advantage over the stock shocks is their longer life.

LD's sells the Ford take off shocks, removed from E450s receiving the Bilstein option, at a very reasonable cost and are a good replacement for the shocks on any of the short Fords. LD usually has a few sets available.

The price from LD is $42 for the set of four, and S&H is $20. The upper bushing set for the front shocks is included, the old captive set in the rear is re-used. I compress the shocks before installation, easy to do, but wasn't sure if the picture wire would work until I tried it. I would wrap once and twist at the lower end of the shock, as you would on a picture frame hook, then press down on the shock right-side-up until compressed, then quickly wrap several turns around the top to secure, and bring the wire back down to the bottom. There I would either hold it during installation to prevent slipping, or twist it onto the pigtail there. Once the shock is slipped onto the bottom bracket, I could do a 'controlled release' of the wire where wrapped at the top, to guide the shock into the upper bracket. Then easy to untie the wire back at the bottom and toss it aside. One length of wire survived four shocks.
Note: removing the old front shocks was a pain, as they are difficult to compress in situ with limited access, requiring much prying with a multitude of tools to clear the upper bracket. In the rear, the lower bracket has a pass-thru bolt that is removed for easy removal of the shock.

The Yahoo issue - today links are working fine. Perhaps Yahoo was just picking on me personally to screw with!

--- Nah, Steve, happens to many of us in one form or another; Yahoo is an equal opportunity "screwor"! ;-)

I believe that is "Yahoo Service" with a nod to animal husbandry.
