I am going to buy such a device and am looking for recommendations. Will use it mainly for checking tire temps. Probably one with a laser aiming function.

I got a Cen-Tech at Harbor freight a few years ago. It was about $29 on special coupon sale. Has the laser pointer which grows in size with distance. Max distance is listed at 64 inches with a 8 inch diameter spot. It has worked fine over the years, uses a 9V battery. I once measured a campfire at over 1000 degrees. Works fine for the tires. I'm not sure what their temperature should be but if they are all the same or near to same I am satisfied.

Chris, this "gun" might be worth consideration; it's a Fluke product, so it's pricey. (Prices seem to run a wide range for temperature guns with laser sights, and even this Fluke is sold at varying prices from several vendors.

Please post when you decide; thanks.

I carry the one that Harbor freight sells but don't use it much anymore as my TST tire pressure/temperature sensors give me the same information on a continuing basis as we travel. The TST has worked flawlessly for the 12,000+ miles we have traveled so far on this Summer/Fall  North American excursion. Still have two months to go.

I have one of the Fluke 62's coming.  It was given away as a promotion for another Fluke instrument I bought.  Now that you mention it, it should be here by now.  Guess I need to follow up the company that handles their promotions.

Although you can't go wrong with a Fluke product, I join Dick in recommending the moderately priced  Raytek MT6 IR thermometer. I've had one for five years, and it has been excellent.

I feel pretty confident about the MT6's accuracy, because its readings match up within a degree F. with those of my FLIR One thermal camera attachment for iPhone. This is a related device that gives not only the temperature, but a visual image showing the temperatures of whatever objects you point it at.

I've learned a lot just by looking around with the FLIR One. I discovered that my Norcold fridge has an anti-condensation heater between the fridge and freezer doors... spotted places where Lazy Daze scrimped on insulation around the TV antenna crack... seen air leaks around the entry door (no surprise there)... learned where my cat sleeps when I'm not home (she leaves a visible hot spot)... lots of fun! :-)

I'm totally envious - almost enough to rush out and buy a smartphone, just so I can get a FLIR attachment for it. But then I'd have to get a cat so I could spy on it, and while I could probably sneak the phone/FLIR past my wife, I'm pretty sure she'd notice the cat in the motorhome during the next trip ...
But, I'm guessing bumper has already has one on the way from Amazon, so our glider group will soon be seeing infrared pictures of our gliders.

Bought my first infrared thermometer at Radio Shack a decade ago to read tire temperature. Decided I wanted one with a laser pointer so I picked up one of these 3 or 4 years ago at Harbor Freight and it still works fine, with the exception of having to replace a battery. For $25 (with coupon) it's was a deal http://www.harborfreight.com/non-contact-infrared-thermometer-with-laser-targeting-69465-8905.html It's calibration has been recently checked against a Thermoworks Thermapen and boiling water and found to be accurate within a couple degree, close enough for my needs.

The Fluke is a nice device and will provide a long service like...if I was 30 years younger, I would get on.
My original Fluke 73 multimeter has to be three decades old, has been used continuously and still work fine.
Great gear for the professional or an active DIYer. Overkill for everyone else.

The FLIR ONE is a game changer, bringing infrared imagine down to a more affordable price. Having used pro-grade FLIR imagers, the amount of information provide from 'seeing' infrared is amazing.
Another toy..err.. tool to save for.

CNET's take on the FLIR: "You can use the device for home repairs, outdoor activities, and freaky photos."

Guess using the office copy machine for derrière shots is passé!

As ever, YMMV. ;-)

Yup. Actually, a thermal camera is like a time machine: you can aim it at a chair or sofa where someone sat five or ten minutes ago and see where the derrière was!

For what it's worth, this Etekcity Infrared Thermometer Gun...

...is on sale right now for $12, with free shipping if you're an Amazon Prime member. I haven't used it, but it gets mostly good reviews, and at this price you can't go too far wrong. :-)

Thanks to all who offered suggestions for an infrared thermometer. The Harbor Freight device seems to be popular in this group for its value and reliability. Fluke is a premier brand. I will choose between those two but since HF has a nice coupon available and my lifespan is narrowing,  I'm leaning that way. I will use it mostly for tires.

And how about that Thermapen! What cool tool to have.
